Electrical problem

I have a 2006 Yamaha vstar 1100 classic. Recently the bike will intermittently only start in neutral. Now once in a when if I turn the key off, then restart it I have no power until I lock out the kickstand. Is there some type of kill switch that may need replacing?
Thanks for any suggestions.
Bob

My 650 will kill the engine if you put the bike in gear with the kickstand down. Pretty sure yours will too.

If your neutral switch is intermittent then the bike wont start with the kickstand down.

you need to check both switches, or logically eliminate one of them

My engine will not start in gear with the kickstand down, but now it will not start up in gear with the kickstand up and the clutch pressed down. I don't even have lights to the gages unless I but the kickstand down and put it in neutral

I would take a close look at the wires to the kickstand switch. Its possible you hit something and the wire is exposed and shorting to the frame.

The neutral switch is less exposed, but if you can see the wires look them over closely too.

If your cluster lights are not coming on at all a wire may be shorting to the chassis (ground) somewhere.

check the clutch switch or just temporarily jump the switch wires together, you can also jump the side stand switch wires together, the neutral switch wire has to be grounded to jump that one out as it's only a single wire

I think it is the clutch switch or neutral switch. It does not recognize the clutch as pulled in so the side stand switch is taking over. Sounds like the sidestand switch is doing its job. Yes you can jump it and that will allow it to start, but may not be the problem. Good luck.
