Hey All,

I'm new to the site and just making introductions, and a solicitation for help.

I own two Motorcycles. The first, a 2007 V-Star, with only 5,800 miles on it, and which I thoroughly enjoyed, for the first 36 miles, then it stopped running. So, I then purchased a 2013 Silverado.

So back to the V-star. Apparently the one-way starter gear stopped engaging, as the starter would turn over but not the motor. It also started to make a clanking sound. The dealer was able to fix the gear problem but he asked if I'd done anything to the cam timing, as apparently the #1 cam, (LH) was not timed correctly. Wow, I thought. How did that happen. So long story short, the V-star has now become my project bike, with probably a bent valve or two.

The AIS system had been 'adjusted' so I removed it all together. The bike was purchased with an performance exhaust already installed 2 into 1. And after hearing the news concerning the cam timing I've been wondering if a cam was installed, though incorrectly. Anyways, I have my toy to tinker with.

I spent 22 years in the AF/ANG, the first 2 1/2 years were spent working on F-16A/B engines, and the remainder fixing all types of electrical and mechanical hardware so I'm not worried about this.

Question - I've been looking for a SS Custom 429 cam, no longer produced, so might anyone have one they might be interested in selling.

Anyways, glad to be apart of this...

a bike with 5800 miles should not slip its timing chain, unless it was drained for an oil change and not refilled.

Did the mechanic say the valves were hitting, or just that the cams were off a tooth or more? It is possible for the cams to be off in one direction and not hit the pistons - but all this seems weird if you were able to ride the bike and it seemed normal.

I cant make the connection between a failed starter and cam timing going south.
