Welcome from Houston, Texas. If you post your issue in the Vstar forum you will get more exposure and comments. I commute daily in Houston so I have experience with heat issue. Here's a few interesting threads to check out when you get a chance.

I tried to find something somewhat related but couldn't find anything, the speedometer/odometer on my 2002 has a digital display that is toasted, i had been looking for an aftermarket direct fit to avoid having that huge crater in the center of the tank to no avail. I purchased a used oem one but am not sure if i would be stuck with the mileage from the bike it was on or is there a way to program it to my bike. Or does anyone know of an aftermarket company that sells a direct fit one

Do you have a windshield on your bike? If you do always park your bike on a sunny day pointing towards the sun.

If you park your bike pointing away from the sun, it will reflect off the curved windshield and reflect back on your tank and speedometer, like a big curved mirror.

The sunlight will also be shining directly on the tank, and that can be enough to cook an electronic speedometer cluster.

I dont know if you can preprogram a used one for the correct mileage. If not write the mileage the bike had when you replaced it, and the mileage on the new speedo, in your owners manual in the service record section.

No windshield, the bike had been left parked for a long time in the same place by the time i got it the mile display was already baked, trying to find aftermarket replacement or info if a used oem one can be programmed to read the mileage or even if the parts off of the used one i bought can be switched with the original

Welcome to the forum from East Tennessee. Have any pics of your bike? Have you checked several of the aftermarket websites that cater to metric bikes?
