Third time's the charm

Hi all...I'm John the Toymaker...

yep....that one (for those that might know me). I am a very recent transplant from the Kawasaki world. Dropped the oold girl a year ago and the little woman said "no more bikes"...I bit my tongue and agreed. Then she tells me...let's get you a new bike for Father's day. I am gobsmacked. So On Saturday, I end up with a 2014 V-star 1300 with just over 5K on it...new bike as far as I am concerned... So.....other than not having a fuel gauge...I otherwise LOVE this bike....

What are the idiosynchroses (sp) that I can expect with this new little horsie....

My past bikes were a Suzuki Savage (heavily modified) and a Kawasaki Vulcan (fully dressed)

Welcome from Atlantic Canada, John. I ride an 1100 so I can't help much with the idiosyncrasies of the 1300 but I can't recall anything bad ever being said on here about one. People seem to really love them. Post a pic of your new ride when you get a chance!

I dont have one, but the thing I see the most is people get the ECM reprogrammed / flashed to make it run a bit smoother at low rpms.

On a used bike it might already have been done.

I dont think the 1300 has any know design issues.

Very few MCs have fuel gauges - reset your trip odo when you get gas, and keep track of when you have to flip the tank over to reserve (if your bike has a petcock). When you flip to reserve stop at the next station to fill up, unless you are really really sure you know how far it will run on the reserve setting.

My 650 gets about 200 miles before it starts stumbling on the main setting and I have to flip it over (about 59mph with a 4.7 gallon tank).

I just googled it, the vStar 1300 does not have a petcock to flip to reserve, it has a light that comes on, then the trip odo resets to zero and tracks how many miles since the light came on. Looks like you get about 20 miles before it starts sucking fumes.

I would still reset the trip odo everytime you fill up, so you know when its coming.

quick list of mentioned issues from an owner of a 1300.

1. throttle jerkiness at slow speed.. ivan's tune solves this issue. Ivan's Performance Products Best upgrade for the buck !!
2. front end clunk over bumps.. this was mostly the pre 10 models. they upgraded the front springs.
3. oil filter removal if using stock filter pre 10 model. filter is a stubby so hard to get a wrench on. newer bikes got a longer/higher capacity oil filter.
4.oil level site glass location. hard to see as the bike has to be level and not on the side stand.
5. Handle bars too wide.. they did improve them after 2010 model but most still upgrade to the RSTD or equivalent as they are narrower and cause less shoulder strain.
6. on deluxe models the front fairing is known to rattle if not secured properly and the rubber gasket between shells is not installed properly.
7. leather wrapped OEM saddlebags are not very well sealed or waterproof.. hence the drain holes in the bottom from factory.
8. heel toe shifter not setup well for using as just a toe shifter. larger feet tend to use toe shift more . easily adjustable.
9. wiping the grin off your face when riding with HD riders and your a little more comfortable with less vibrations and you can keep up easily.

FYI no fuel gauge but i usually can travel 50 miles after the fuel light comes on but I wouldn't push it much further.

Welcome from Houston, Texas. Glad you joined us. Any pictures to share of your new ride? I'm on an 1100 also without gas gauge. Just set the tripometer and you will find out within a few tanks when you need gas by the mileage, it's no big deal. Here's a few interesting threads to check out when you get a chance.
