When engine gets hot it turns over slow or not at all as if battery were dead but I’ve had the battery tested and it was ok. They even put a new battery in and it still wouldn’t start until the engine cooled down about 20 minutes. Then it turned over normally and started right up.

have not heard of that with your bike, but its a very common problem with the starters on early 80's and late '70s goldwings

from memory I think the brushes in the starter wear out, and right before they go completely they work when the starter is cold, but act like yours when the starter is hot, because something expands when hot just enough to make the starter short or bind.

Its a common GW problem, you should be able to google hot starter goldwing failure and get more details, might be similar unless someone else replies with a similar problem on a VS950.

Thank you for your reply. I figured it was some sort of heat issue, possibly with a ground, but never thought about the brushes in the starter. I was trying to avoid purchasing a starter but it looks like I might have to go that route if no other replies suggest otherwise.

I have not had issues with mine, but a few of the guys I ride with had a local auto electric shop rebuild theirs, for a lot less than buying a new one. They don't ride 950's, but if\when I have issues I'll go that route.

Some 950 starters have had an issue with the magnets coming loose. Not sure if that could be your issue since it works fine cold, but might be worth a look.

You're never really lost on a bike. You're just riding somewhere you haven't ridden before.
