sparatic short

Good morning, i own a 01 vstar 1100 classic and have had a short problem all summer. I can ride for 5 min or sometimes a couple of hours and then all of a sudden the speedo starts to jump all over the place and then the bike dies. I have disconnected all extras from my bike like stereo, charger etc. Bike is back to factory, just the + and - hooked to a new battery. checked wires and see no breaks checked all fuses and they all seem good. I also checked the stator, rectifier and condenser and the bike is charging properly. Is there something I am missing? It is very discouraging; any help would be appreciated. Thanks

First of all, welcome from Atlantic Canada. I had a 2000 1100 and it was a great bike. You might get better responses if you post your issue in the proper forum as not everyone reads the new member introduction threads.

Check where it grounds to the frame. It's a relatively common area for a bad connection on these bikes. Even if it looks good take it off and clean it really good.

Welcome from Houston, Texas. Glad you joined us. NortherRider is correct about posting issues in Vstar forum for better exposure and replies. If you have same issue after checking ground to frame connection let us know. Sounds like you have a regulator that's failing when it gets hot. Here's a few interesting threads to check out when you get a chance.

Ride often and safe.

what you are describing is not a short (insulation cut away on a wire touching the frame) - that would blow a fuse

it sounds like one of your connectors is corroded, or as other have said a ground wire has a bad connection to the frame.

start with the battery black wire to the frame, trace it down and see where it goes, and disconnect it from the frame and clean it up.

Next I would look at the ECM, because it controls the ignition and the speedo - trace its ground wire to the frame. The ground wires are usually black.

If you dont have the schematic for your bike already its easy to find the factory service manual online as a free download - the schematics are near the back of the manual.

If the bike was just shutting the engine off I would suspect the kickstand switch (engine will not run with the kickstand down in gear), but since you are losing other electrical functions it sounds like a main ground wire.
