Newbie from Florida

Hello,
I've rode dirtbikes most my life and got my first street bike. A 2000 v star 650 classic. Picked it up for a steal but has 37000 miles.

From what the seller told me it was maintained regularly at a local reputable bike shop. Only issue is a slight oil leak from under the clutch case. I read that this could be a loose screw causing it, and I went and checked them all. One still needed tightening near the bottom, but their were 2 I couldn't check at the very bottom blocked by the frame and kickstand.

I have a backseat just missing the front mount to it, seller bought it on eBay and said didn't come with front mount for the seat. I just leave it off for now.

There is a slight scuff on the front fender and a golf ball size dent on the tank.

Last issue is the brake light doesn't activate when I press the front brake.

Sorry for the crappy cell pics, was the first night riding it home with the cheapo helmet that came with it and a huge smile on my face

Welcome to our Sector!

You definitely look happy (how could anyone NOT be happy)

Thanks for the pics and the details too. Sounds like mostly minor issues you need to deal with. Pipes look aftermarket - any idea if it was rejetted to match?

If you're just hitting the streets for the first time, you might consider the MSF beginner course. Many here find it highly beneficial, even when not new to riding.

Be safe!

Thanks!

The pipes are cobra, but I have no idea beyond that, the pipes were installed by the original owner. I'll get some better pics tomorrow. Would rejetting be something to accomplish over a weekend by a novice mechanic, or something that requires some special tools? I'm on a budget.

I'm signed up at a Harley dealership for the course(they give you a free full day rental of a Harley after completion). but its the same price as everywhere else.

Good choice on the course - even better that you get the free rental!

Jetting can be done by a novice - only 'special' tool is manometer to sync carbs which you can make in under 10 min with simple instructions on net. Carb syncing sounds intimidating but is no big deal and you'll wonder why you feared it once you've done it.

Garage
Welcome form just a bit north of you eh . Good choice of bikes and very modable also. Great to hear that your going on a course, you'll notice some of the bad habits that want to creep in from your dirt bike days. I know, I just about bought the farm before I took the course myself So have you had it out of the garage yet?

Ride safe and keep it shiny side up.
