New guy looking to buy a star

Hello all. Just wanted to say hi. I'm in the market for a new bike and realize I really like the yamahas. Unfortunately, I still can't decide which one. I've narrowed it down to 2 bikes. One is a 2004 road star 1700, the other a 1999 royal star tour classic. I haven't been to see the road star yet, its about two hours away. There's about $1000 difference in the price too. I was just wondering if you guys could give me a comparison between the two bikes? Is one much more comfortable, or does the road have that much more power? I've never had a big bike before, my last bike was a shadow 1100. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Welcome

Cwat,

It might be more of a personal thing. Both are reliable bikes. I have not owned either. But some things to consider.

The Road Star is a V Twin cruiser. Designed to look, sound, and ride in that traditional Cruiser look and feel. Nice low end torque. Yamaha's most customized bike, been out for a long time.

Royal Star is more of a smoother touring bike with a cruiser look. Little heaver, four cylinder water cooled engine that looks like a V Twin. Engine develops its power higher up in range. May not get as good gas mileage but OK. Probably better on the highway.

You should ride both and decide which is you.

Here is a Dyno chart for the Road star. I don't have a Royal Star but, I believe just a little more power.

Some infor on the Royal Star.

Thanks Dave! I just got back from looking both bikes over, I think I'm leaning heavily toward the road star. Is there anything in particular I should know about them before buying one?
