Just got my Star

Hey guys and Gals, just got myself a nice 2000 V Star 650 Classic. 16000 km on the clock. What a difference from my GW250 I was riding. Anyway looking to learn about maintenance and any little quirks the bike may have.

Congrats!,

I know right!?! I took the CHP course on a 250cc Yamaha and the day I bought Lucy Belle was my 1st time with a bigger bike. On a wing and a prayer I decided to take her up through the hills preferring to face twisties relatively alone rather than city streets or the expressway.

Tom,

I had to pull up a calculator to convert 16km to 10,000 miles.

The VS650s are incredibly reliable bikes. The only thing you will have to attend to for quite a while is oil and filters, and valve adjustments.

At 16,000 km you are right about the point to replace your rear tire if its still the original from the factory. The front tire can usually go twice as long as the rear.

Other than that all it wants is gas and go go go.

edited:now that I think of it, your bike is a 2000 - I would replace the front tire too if its original, would be pretty dried out by now.

Thanks for the advice, getting oil changed and final drive done on monday and getting a once over at a local reliable shop, then hoping to manage most of it myself.

best blind advice for doing your own work, even oil changes: if you dont have a torque wrench, get one

1/4" drive, around 70 ft-lbs size.

Most people that have experience working on cars dont understand how important it is to properly torque the nuts and bolts on a motorcycle, which is mostly aluminum where you mess with it. And the problem is its easy to over torque and strip things out - even just changing the oil and filter.

cheapo deluxe from Harbor Freight is far better than nothing.

Welcome from Reno. Congrats on the bike and ride safe. If the tires are old definitely get some new rubber even if they have good tread. The rubber will be hard and the ride is completely different with new. Safer too.
