$200 Tax, Just to BUY and Bike, COOK County, IL

Hello All,

I wish I was writing under better circumstances.

I got a tax bill for $200.00 JUST FOR REGISTERING in Cook County (Chicago) IL.
This is in addition to the tax I already paid to the state, and in addition to the ~$125 registartion fee! This brings my total fees up to over 33% of the purchase price, which is total BS.

I am trying to find a way out of this, and if anyone knows one please let me know!

Beware all in this rotten county you may be on the line for this sham of a revenue builder. We all must protest this, my letter is in now to protest. I am also contacting a lawyer I know. You can request a payment plan here so at least you can eat some of the revenue they steal in administrative costs and buy yourself some time (towards the bottom of the page): http://www.cookcountygov.com/portal/...tailer_use_tax

PS: This applies to all vehicles, no matter age or purchase price, so if you were thinking of restoring something old, factor this BS into your cost.

Sincerely and with great ire,
Pyrobooster

I don't think you'll be getting out of it. It seems pretty cut and dry.

I JUST bought a bike privately on Wednesday, read the same $200 thing. I went to the naperville DMV and they didnt charge me that at all. Paid only Registration $140-ish and $25 for something else, can't remember. There was never a $200 charge and I reside in CROOK county. Try them out, it worked for me.

...Or are you saying that they send you tax papers after purchase to still pay the $200 fee?

Yeah I got this 4 months after I registered the bike. I paid the same initial fees too.

Gotta pay to play, as they say.

I don't like it either, but I suck it up and move on.

Just wish I new before I bought!

Yeah, I just wish I new before I bought, so I could plan for the cost. You'd think they'd let me know when I registered the bike but I guess that's not how Cook county works. I'm lucky I titled my old XS650 2 years ago otherwise that would have cost me almost $200 bucks too.

Move south. Illinois has some draconian laws- including the lack of conceal and carry.
Tennesee and Texas have no state tax- but property or Ad Valorem might be stiffer.
