Hi, my name is marcus and I just traded for a 99 customized v star 650 or at least that's what I was told. As soon as I figure how to post pics I will. This looks like a very nice forum. Thanks !

Welcome M&M!

The rear fender is from a Classic and has been customized by moving the license plate and brake light to the side. Looks like your front fender is gone though - I guess that counts as custom.

Looks like your left side carb co ER is gone and the AIS is removed so you probably have aftermarket pipes and a rejetted carb.

Paint looks custom also.

Ok here is more info on me. Pretty much my life story..
Well my screen name is my initials and my best friends birthday year so that is my name. To tell about myself is a long story so here goes. I am a retired a&p mechanic but not by choice and also used to fly puddle jumpers. I am 46 years old and have had a triple bypass heart surgery and 2 valves replaced with pig parts 3 years ago after being on a ventilator for 8 weeks with double pneumonia and had 3 major heart attacks pretty much all at once so to speak. I have a transplant kidney post 16 years which failed at the same time all this happened and I am on dialysis as well. I am also a double below knee amputee and to top it all off I have a permanent trachea situation from the ventilator ordeal.. I had recently just purchased a 1979 Honda cb400t1 hawk kick start model and was in the process of restoring it when this deal came about for this bike. I was converting my Honda to a electric start and still will be doing that as I go through the summer months. I put an add in Craigslist to sell my boat because I can't take chances of being around the lakes anymore with it because a tablespoon of water goes down my blow hole then I am done for as so to speak. It was a 14 foot flat bottom boat with a 6hp motor and trailer I traded for. The guy called and asked if I was interested in this bike so that is how I found myself with this beautiful set of wheels. I mean at least I think it is a nice ride for what I traded for it. The person I got it from said his wife wanted him to get something for the entire family to enjoy. I guess his loss is my good luck? Only time will tell because I am sure not to lucky as you have just read.

Anyhow I don't know much about this bike other than it runs and sounds very nice. It has a little over 20,000 miles on it now. I am trying to find a heel shifter for it so I can shift the gears because I no longer have any ankle movement or toes to shift with because of my prosthetic feet. I had a heel shifter installed on my Honda and I could shift it very easily before I tore it all apart this winter for restoration. I had been riding scooters for the last 2 years when I feel up to it but wanted another motorcycle to get on the interstates with to cruise around on when I have time or not in the dialysis clinic. Well now you know everything about me I guess there is to know.

I read that someone said this bike was missing the left side carb co ER is gone and the AIS is removed ? I have no idea what is gone on this bike? This is the first Yamaha I have ever owned as far as street motorcycles. I was told it had Harley bars on it as well ? It also has a paint job that is blue until the sunlight hits it then it changes to a purple hue . If anyone can point out stuff for me missing or what i need to do to it with in reason I appreciate it. Is there a online maintenance schedule or manual to show what needs to be serviced on it ? I appreciate a link if there is one? Also I actually want to put turn signals on it if it were to be possible and am looking for a wiring manual on it as well to show where everything is located along with color codes.
This is all new to me. I am posting more pictures of it.

Thanks everyone for any help you can give me on this.

OK, couple more things I see in the additional pics:
(1) Don't know what bar that is (could be HD) - it looks nice, but the cables/wires look a bit tight even in the straight-on position. I'd make sure there is sufficient play with the bars turned fully to each side.
(2) Are you sure that front tire is a motorcycle tire? It doesn't look right - could be dangerous
(3) Those are not stock pipes - may sound a lot better if you like loud pipes (no mufflers there and they are short). Hopefully, the carb jets have been changed to match the exhaust.
(4) You've got a hypercharger in place of the OEM filter - definitely looks cool. Again, hopefully the jets were changed to match the air intake (and exhaust combined).
(5) You've already got floor boards, so all you need is the heel-toe shifter - I'd start shopping ebay and it shouldn't be too hard to find.
(6) You're missing the front fender - more of a bobber look I suppose. But you're also going to have more stuff flying up onto the bike (and you).
(7) Turn signals can be easily added to the rear at the fender side-mounting points (either forward or aft bolt). I have them in the aft bolt location.

That's all I see - glad to hear it runs as nice as it looks!

Just noticed:

You've got an aftermarket "profiler" type seat - nice and worth at least $375 retail
You've got what looks to be a home-brew "mustache bar" - the front upper highway bar
You've got a gremlin bell hanging off your side mount license plate (keeps the bad mojo away - sounds like you could use it! :D )

That's why we're here - ask and we answer (I have no idea if the answers will be right, but you'll get answers :D)

Definitely check the tire. Of course, I can't see it in the pic as well as you can in person - and even then I could be wrong (see above). It just looks odd to me and way too wide.

I looked at the front. I didn't even realize the fender was gone till I got the reply back.. I thought it was made this way. LOL I would like to add a front fender if possible, but don't see a place to bolt one on ? Looks like the front shock covers are smooth with no bolt attach place. BTW..Do they make chrome fenders ? The paint on all of it is custom and is a metalflake blue with a purple hue in the sunlight. I doubt I could match it ever. I found a heel shifter on ebay I think will work and ordered a chrome metal set of signal lights tonight. On the back chrome bars on each side is two sharp points sticking out on eack side I think for saddle bags ? They are sharp and dangerous . I done scared my arm on one of them already. They got to go and if anyone needs them please email as u can have them. I don't know what type they are but ouch is all I can say.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Yep those spikes are covering the holes where you would mount your turn signals. You would need a bolt mount with a hollow core bolt. It becomes a real pain in the arse to remove the fender, but looks very sleek.

Front fender mounting holes should be low beside the tire / rim. With that fatty tire on the front you may not be able to get your hand inside to feel the holes.

Hi and thanks for pointing that out.

I went and recheck the front end. A little lower I found where the screws attach the fender. I never noticed it before. I took a closer look at it and two bolts are snapped or twisted off in the mounts and one is broken out on the side. I could probably drill out the broken ones, but the one that has the side of the hole broke out I imagine would need to be replaced or fixed somehow. I may have to replace the whole piece ? Now I am going to have to find a fender to fit as well and may repaint the fenders and tank to all match . Does anyone know what years fit this model ? Also what is the correct tire size for the front if anyone knows ? This tire is awfully wide on the front end . I drove it home like this slowly because I had problems shifting (because of my leg) and also because it was so cold outside that day. Please everyone bare with me as I am new to this bike as it is to me. I am by the looks of things going to be in the learning mode for quite some time.

Thanks

MarCus
