Found this on my stepson's bike yesterday. I haven't seen a car tire do this in......well.......ever! He's been riding around and didn't even notice! Granted, it is the front and he can't put a car tire on, but this is a testiment of the quality of motorcycle tires compared to car tires.

Judging by the tread, that tire is well past due for replacement. I think it would be interesting to look at the DOT date code to see how old it is. I'd guess at least ten years. What year is the bike, and how many miles? Wouldn't surprise me to learn that is the tire that came on the bike when it was new.

I would have been shocked too if they were 1989 tires, or even original, cause the bike is a 1998.:D I bought the bike 2 years ago and the tires looked like brand new, and sold it to my son in law last year. Rear tire was just showing a slight wear pattern beginning to start. The bike has 34,000 miles on it, so I would be surprised if they were original. I will check the dates when I get back to it. For what it's worth, we put new tires on our Ford Escape last year. They had 70,000 miles on them and they were 10 years old. They did not look like this.

I just looked at my '88 VLX, and as near as I can tell, the tire on it was made in 2000, and it still looks ok, and it sat outside a lot. And the tire on my 2007 V Star (bought new in 2012) is a 2006 and looks great, except the tread is getting down there a little after 9,000 miles. Still waiting on a reply from my son for the serial number.
