Brake Light

My tail light is on but no brake light. The tail light and brake light are on the same fuse and the fuse is good. Would a bad brake light switch knock the brake light out or where else should I look? (The manual says take it to a dealer if either go out and it's not the fuse.)

the first thing is to take a Volt/ohm meter and see if the bulb is open, and see if there is 12V to the brake light pins on the light socket.

If the running light is good the ground connection must be ok.

Check the wire under the fender, maybe your rear tire kicked something up and severed the brake light wire in the fender well.

There is a connector on the rear fender, so you can take it off - check that, if the 12V is not there when you step on the brake keep chasing the wires forward.

the service manuals for just about all Vstar bikes can be found online in PDF format for free. The wiring diagrams are in the back of the manual.

I had the same issue and few years ago. After spending hours tracing wires it turned out to be the socket. Remember it's a duel filament bulb (you did check the bulb first?). Anyway there was corrosion on the brake wire going into the tail light socket. I cleaned the corrosion and soldered the wire back on. Keep us informed.

I did buy a volt/ohm meter awhile back and I have to admit I'm quite perplexed. It's like reading Chinese. The instructions are Greek.

The culprit was the brake light switch down by the brake pedal. I'm amazed it works now. Usually I turn an initial problem into 3 more problems. The pin that opens and closes the connection was not moving freely. I manually moved it until it was moving freely. I'll probably just replace it now though. (The pin is in between the two connectors)

I had assumed you tried using both the foot brake and the front hand brake - both turn on the brake light.

Im really surprised the wiring is daisy chained thru the foot switch. I would not have expected that.

Learned something new here!
