  1. Cruiser type bikes future?

    General Bike Talk
Cruisers are merely a genre of bikes and there are bar-hoppers as well as long distance riders who like the ergos of a cruiser. Fact is that the Sport touring genre has been popular for the decades that I've been riding for one fact... it works. There isn't a single style of motorcycle that...
  2. Gypsy Tour 2019

U.S. Northeast (ME, VT, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY)
After ~30 years my little bro and I are going to hit Laconia (Weirs Beach Gypsy Tour) 2019 this June. The last time I was there was with my bro and friends back in 1990 and from what I've heard it's not quite the hard core biker event that it used to be... even by 1990 it started turning into a...
  3. New bike?

    General Bike Talk
Any time I hear the word 'cherry'... (Joan Jett and Lita Ford anyone?) One of the 'must haves' on my XL1200 chopper project (Cordelia) is the oil bag I'm welding up using an old Cherry Bomb M-80 muffler... the stamped "Cherry Bomb' logo is going to be highlighted for sure.
  4. New bike?

    General Bike Talk
After owning and riding so many different makes and models of motorcycles over the course of ~40 years I can say that the XVS650 is one of my favorites for it's form and function. Motorcycles have been my primary mode of motorized transportation since the 80s and my XVS650 is one that I can rely...
  5. Question Why

    General Bike Talk
At the risk of outing myself as the cynic I am, why would anyone really care in the long run what the name is attached to a particular make/model? There's a motorcycle out there for just about everyone's tastes in the new and used market so why fret over something that is no longer in existance?
  6. EASY RIDER the Movie - your thoughts

    General Bike Talk
It's OK, a B movie from the 60s and 70s era like many others in my collection with 'Hells Angels on Wheels' starring Jack Nicholson being one the better ones... I like it more than ER. One of my favorite motorcycle movies to date is 'The World's Fastest Indian'... it resonates with me and I feel...
  7. Please ease my mind

    V Star
It's sometimes difficult to weed out truth on the internet because there's a lot of real world knowledge that was handed down, proven to be valid and therefore based on experience that never made it here. Yet misinformation can be perpetuated by so many people with no real life experience...
  8. No crank no star

    V Star
Wow, what conditions was the bike stored in and for how long? I've picked up bikes that sat in junkyards for years that didn't have seized motors.
  9. Please ease my mind

    V Star
In my 40 years of owning/riding bikes there were very few crap bikes produced by manufacturers over the last several decades. Sure there were a few oddities and there are some makes and models that may have certain engineering failings or problems during a certain production run but most of the...
  10. Got in a good ride today.

    New Riders
IMO the most important thing a new rider can learn is how to use the front brake. I know of too many riders who don't use it out of fear or because they don't have one because chopper style dictates not having one. Having practiced using the front brake effectively when I first started riding...
  11. Easy Rider choppers and the builders grandson

    General Bike Talk
LOL! As with most biker movies of that era I agree with the first three observations but I can't agree that they're unwatchable. Maybe I'm twisted but I have a large collection of biker themed 'B' movies from the 60s and 70s and I love watching them. It's like opening a time capsule and being...
  12. Got in a good ride today.

    New Riders
Hey tbzg, sorry for being so late in responding but IMO you got a seriously nice bike... I'm a huge fan of the XVS650 and unfortunately it's an underestimated bike and in many cases also misunderstood. The motor is not a big V-Twin like with a lot of popular cruisers, it basically has more in...
  13. What's the coldest weather you'll ride in?

    General Bike Talk
We've had a cold spell here in Louisville Kentucky with temps in the single digits in the a.m. and warming up into the teens by the afternoon and my XVS650 fires right up and gets me to work and back home. What an awesome bike this 650 V-Star is.
  14. Easy Rider choppers and the builders grandson

    General Bike Talk
Don't forget about Cliff Vaughs who worked with Ben Hardy on the bikes. Another notable figure is Sugar Bear who made long forked choppers handle extremely well due to his springer designs fitted with the iconic 'elf shoe' rockers. If you're into choppers then this is a pretty good read...
  15. Float adjustment...

    V Star
If the fuel level is too high then you bend the tab towards the fuel valve. I don't bother with static measurements of the float height when the carb is upside down or other such methods... I measure 'dynamically' by removing the bowl retaining screws, hold the bowl to the carb which is at it's...
  16. Repair Manual Recommendation

    V Star
Chilton, Clymer and Haynes are the easy choices and they're OK for the average shade-tree mechanic but nothing beats the Yamaha factory service manual... nothing is as in-depth and accurate.
  17. Def sounds wrong

    V Star
As lesblank pointed out many bikes have a 'wasted spark' ignition, that's typical for many bikes. My 2000 Sporty has that type of ignition where each cylinder's spark plug will fire twice for every combustion cycle, one spark actually ignites the air/fuel mix but the other does nothing since it...
  18. V-Star 1100 exhaust popping (I've tried everything)

    V Star
Your bike could just be jetted a little lean. During warm weather my 650 runs fine but temps have been in the high 20s to low 30s (°F) and she'll pop on decel even after being thoroughly warmed up. If I pull out the enrichener ('choke') a little, the popping goes away. I just need to fatten up...
  19. Closed deal on a Granite Gray beauty today.

    Venture/Eluder
Man, it would be fun and so easy to torment you.
  20. Closed deal on a Granite Gray beauty today.

    Venture/Eluder
LOL, not in middle America and further west. Most motorcyclists do 80-85mph. On my trip to Colorado and back I was averaging 80mph on the interstates and was passed many times by large groups of riders yet seldomly passed anyone else.
