I am more of a spectator than a participator when it comes to forums...but I have been unable to locate a thread that addresses my question.

I have an '09 Vstar 950, which so far has turned out to be an excellent decision to add to my garage. It has been my (nearly)daily driver since I bought it in May 2010. My round trip to and from work is about 130 miles, which puts me around 650 miles a week on the bike if the weather cooperates.

I have noticed in the past few weeks that when the bike is cold, it seems like the clutch does not want to disengage in first gear....like the brakes are having to fight the engine. It will stop without stalling while still in gear, but it is about like taking a cookie from a kid...you can do it, but it takes effort. Once the engine temperature comes up, it appears to go away. Not being amazingly versed on motorcycles WITHOUT plastic(and this being my first cruiser), I wanted to get some input from the "experts." Does anyone have any experience on what the expected clutch life might be on the 950's, and is there an adjustment to address an aging clutch??

Clutch works and adjusts the same way as on a sport bike. You don't say how many miles total but from your post it does not seem like you would be anywhere near the clutch's life span. How old is the oil in the bike? They tend to get clunky just like sport bikes with old oil too.

It just had an oil change about 2 weeks ago, and that did not change the behavior I have been noticing. I've got almost 12k on the bike right now...just wanted to see if anyone else has put enough miles on their 950 to reach the replacement point.

There is know reason not to get 60.000+ miles with out a problem from the clutch, but you will probably need a clutch cable before then.
If there is to much free play in the clutch- it will be some what stiff.

Out on bond,

Just in case you don't know some clutch's have a cable some hydrolic. I believe yours is a cable. There is an adjustment at each end of the cable you want to have just a little free play as someone said. The cable will stretch with use and needs to be adjusted once and a while.

I don't see a manual for the 950 here but look at the 1300. I think they are a lot alike. Page 3-13.

It should still be under warranty. Take it back and let the dealer fix it for you.

Maybe he's launching the V-Star like his drag bike :)
Kidding, check the adjustment, if not that have the dealer mess with is since it's still under warranty.

Adjustment at top/handle adjusts cable freeplay (4-8mm about 1/8-1/4 in), adjustment at bottom adjusts engagement. Slack cable loosen locknut adjust screw in till it just touches then back out 1/8-1/4 turn hold and tighten locknut.
