Put a set of V&H slip-ons on my 1100 about a year ago, sounds great but now it pops at idle & when you deaccelerate. bypassed the AIS system & can't find any leaks in the exhaust. I think I might be a little lean on the fuel-air mix. Buddy of mine suggested putting a jet kit in it which seems logical. Whay say you o great gurus of the Star Bike Nation?

It's rare to have to rejet V+H slipmons but it does happen. If it were me I'd get a pods system and install it since I would have the carbs in hand to rejet. This mod would give some more punch to your bike and enhance that grin you already have. It wouldn't be as much as a full exhaust system but still noticeable non the less.

Mine did the same thing after adding Cobra slip ons. Most people say you don't have to rejet with slip ons alone but I needed to. The first thing to try is opening the PMS 1/4 turn or 1/2 turn and see if that helps. If it does, great! If it doesn't you need to step up the pilot jets one or two numbers and add a shim under the needles. As soon as I got the pilot jets big enough and shimmed the needles my bike ran much better.:D

You just need to adjust the PMS. Backfire on decel and at idle is obviously with throttle closed...or the idle circuit. So changing main jets or making needle adjustments are totally unnecessary. I've yet to have one that couldn't be fixed with the proper PMS adjustment....as long as everything else is good order. If you find the bike bogging down at 1/3 throttle on up....then you look at mains and needles.....otherwise leave them alone.

Also....you don't put a "jet kit" in a carb. You just put 2 main jets and a couple 1 cent washers in (if needed)....that's it...you need nothing else. There are tons of people who buy those kits....spending $80 ....and end up tossing it all out except for the $10 worth of stuff they actually needed. It's just silly......and meant only to steal money from the gullible.

Thanks Guys. Mick, I know just enough to be dangerous when it comes to carbs. Where is the PMS located & where is a good place to start with it. Thought I heard someone say that it wasn't adjustable, but what say you? I've always gotten good advice from this site.

The PMS screws are found underneath the carbs. They have a brass plug covering them from the factory if they haven't been adjusted after the bike was purchased. You'll have to pull the carbs out to drill these plugs out if still installed. Then you screw them in and once that is done, screw them out between 3 and 4 turns. Check the knowledge base for better adjustments for your issue.

Of course they are adjustable. All circuits are adjustable on these carbs. How else would you ever tune them? Whoever told you they weren't is probably not someone you want to listen to about working on these bikes.

Go HERE and read everything.....

Then go HERE to learn how to do it all yourself.

Download the Jetting Bible....and follow the instructions EXACTLY.....that's all there is to it.

I bought PMS ThumbScrews from Tim at Metric Magic....best $45 I ever spent. Easy to adjust them in seconds without removing the carbs and no tools needed. You can take the time to really dial the bike in after making performance modifications. Small pic, but you get the idea...
