2012 Yamaha V Star 1300 - upgrades, recommendations, questions, concerns!! Any help appreciated.

Hello All!

I just recently bought a mint 2012 1300 with 15k kms. It is bone stock except for a windshield.

I'm looking for as many recommendations from experienced users if possible

The first is fairly straight forward. Is there a best setup ie pipe/breather/programmer setup? Big sound and big performance?

I need a new rear tire soon and rear brake pads. I am wondering, what's the widest tire it can fit? I recall having a huge tire on my Stryker.

I hate that weird whirrrrrrr / whine sound., Can this be addressed?

Any places you recommend for used aftermarket parts?

Any services you recommend? Ie flash/port/dyno/digital?

I also want some nice bags for long trips

Bomb proof rain gear?

I'd personally like to customize the crap out of it.

Thank you in advance.

Mint. Stock. Red.

Things I think are mandatory.
1. Get Ivan to flash the ECU - This is a no brainer first change. Fixes all the performance issues and gets. all the air flow and exhaust changes are accounted for.
2. Lower wind deflectors - the head buffeting is horrible on these. I used the National Cycle but you have to use their windshield (if you use one). I also tried the Memphis shades. Works equally well, just doesn't look as good.
3. Barons BAK - not only does it increase the air flow, you knees won't be knocking it around. It's super slim and doesn't get in the way.
4. Baron 1" Touring Handlebar - narrows the reach and pullback is where it should be. They started making it in 2014 this way standard.
5. Cobra 4" slip-on exhaust
6. ED Big Touring seat. SOOO much more comfortable

Things I personally liked.
1. 3" foot extension from Extension Depot on Ebay. Really liked it more stretched out.
2. Easy Bracket or Viking QD saddle bag mounts. These make taking your bags off and on a snap. I used my Viking bags like a suitcase when we were traveling. Great with any bag. Picture below we left the bags back at the hotel.
3. LED Bulbs all round. Especially switchback front turn signal LED's that serve as daylight running lights.
4. Breakaway 7CP01 throttle lock
5. Fobo TPS sensors
6. Michelin Commander II/III tires
7. Progressive front springs
8. I ended up with a Memphis Shades Batwing and much prefer it to the National Cycle windshield.

These are great bikes and I really miss mine. It got totaled a little over a year ago and moved on to a Stratoliner. I really like the Stratoliner, but wish I still had the 1300.

Well. If there is only going to be one reply, it might as well be awesome. Wow man thank you.

If I have many more questions, should I post a new thread each time or maybe update main thread?

My only concern about the flash, is the downtime! Shipping and flashing. I wonder how long it takes from Canada and back. I won't need a fuel programmer after this, right?

When you say Memphis shades, do you mean their lowers? Or the actual batwing or whatever lol
It is always VERY WINDY in the prairies.

So the different bar will narrow the grip approx how much? Does the bar go further back? Or shorter?

Clutch?

Slip on vs actual pipes. Is the sound and performance similar? Seeing how it's 2 slip on exhausts? Or would I see justifiable Gaines going dragsters/entire exhaust? I personally love SOUND and performance. (I see you said slip ons, what's your opinion on full setup? I guess I can google all this stuff.

Wow. Your advice keeps going. I hope everyone was ok in the end brother? Thanks again for taking the time, I never seen such a detailed post!

I will definitely look into that seat. How does it "sit" compared to the stock saddle? Any closer or further back, back support?

Ok Viking hard bags and bracket I assume? Thanks. This is a priority, for travel but also to make it more viable for a work vehicle.

Yes. My bike is red, so I really want a black batwing! I'm glad you brought that up. Does it do a better job at wind protection? Sure looks better!

Lowering links?

Is the throttle lock, like a makeshift cruise control? Obviously works great if you're recommending them!

I love the led suggestions, as the stock are painful. Hahaha. I wonder 8f that entire rear assembly can be replaced with something sexier yet led? It looks ok but it's quite cheap and flimsy

I will start buying tomorrow lol. I'm in Canada, so hopefully I can get most things. Hoping the flash turn around is 1 week tops?

Going to bed 221am gonna be a long day tomorrow, errrr today. I also put on 200kms just aimlessly bombing

I know my tires are decent? I want to say ... However, whoever owned it that short 14,000 kms... The rear tire is nearing its end... So, I might as well but those 2 rubbers.

Any thoughts on music? Ever use a full face with speakers? Any good? Problem is I do prefer a small beanie helmet

I feel like I should put new oils and filter in.

I need actual RAIN PROOF GEAR lol... Any recommendations? I'm talking driving across states and hitting Armageddon.

Why are Scorpion helmets so expensive? I need a full face recommendation, especially if they have high end audio options but water right, is my goal. Again. Travel

I should literally go for a 2.5 hour south and check out prices in Grand Forks ND!

Thanks again for everything. I'll be back

Only picture I have of the bike. I change phones like underwear. That's a slurpy, we are the Slurpee capitol of the world!

This will help with Ivan and getting an idea of performance with different exhaust and intakes. He'll flash it in one day and send it back the next on a 1300. Only downtime is shipping. Check out the dyno charts. https://www.ivansperformanceproducts.com/vstar13.htm

On the lower deflectors, the Memphis Shades work fine. They just look a little cheaper to me. The national cycle lowers look fantastic but cost a lot more and you have to use their windshield system. Works well though. I only switched because I went with a Memphis Shades QD Batwing. Trade-offs. 😉 BTW I have a windshield and lowers from National Cycle if you go that route. Only need mounting hardware.

The ED Big Touring seat doesn't seat you much different than the stock seat but is far more comfortable. ED used to work for Ultimate, so they're nearly identical and he's in Canada.

The throttle lock, locks the throttle like a cruise. I tried the Atlas and the Breakaway. Both are great but I prefer the Breakaway. Controls are a little more intuitive to me.

On the back, I took off the turn signals and the behemoth license plate mount and used this: Custom Dynamics Quad Radius All-in-One Motorcycle License Plate Frame, Amber Signals, Red Run/Brake Light, and Plate Illumination - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M9ME4IG?ref_=cm_sw_r_apann_dp_AT7X10J2ZF0YP86R3ZCN
you'll also need the radius mount. I was able to the spacer off the old mount to match the new radius of the custom dynamics. Fills the gap behind the new mount.

Hers a link to the thread with a picture of the lay down plate. You can get the OEM connectors from 12Oclock labs to make it easier. Turn Signal Mod
Hey, your gas tank badge has me confused. Did you get an XVS 1300 (same engine as a Stryker), or a Royal Star 1300 (V4 engine)? I dont wanna give you moot advice.

So this replaces everything in the rear and should get ne pulled over?? It's so affordable!?

Also. What about chopping that rear end? Lower? Fatter rear tire? Thx brother. Gonna ride to North Dakota tomorrow lol

Looks and feels like my old Stryker...

It's a very star 1300 xvbs whatever lol. It's like a Stryker but more sit back and relax style. I love it. I want to remove t GG one batches asap... I heard a heat gun and fishing line, some goo begone?

What about a proper paint chip repair? It's easy to access but... I dunno how how. Haha
