My 250 virago has a three position petcock.
The main and res positions are vaccum/diaphram and the pri (prime) position is wide open gravity feed (no diaphram).
I've been extremely lucky to just happen to have gas stations magically appear before I run out of the
apparent 4 or 5 miles of fuel that switching to either res or pri gives me after I start sputtering on the main.
Should be more like 30-some miles.
Any and all theories would be considered very helpful here.

As soon as it starts to 'sputter', making you switch to reserve, stop and visually look/listen in your tank and see how much gas you have. You should be able to 'guesstimate' fairly well. From this you should be able to determine how many miles you got left.

Is this what you are asking?
