650 lighting problem

Yesterday my tail light and meter light both stopped working. My tail light has power, and the brake light works. The filliments are both okay. The meter is getting power too, up to the harness that comes up through the gas tank. The indicator lights work, but the speedo back light is out. Is it just a weird coincidence that they both stopped working at the same time, or are they somehow connected (besides the battery)? Any clue how to fix them? I'm thinking the wiring between the battery and the tail light might be damaged, but I don't know what to do about the meter.
