Hello. Providing all the paperwork checks out, tomorrow I will have an '04 650 Classic in my hands. I'll also have a '99 frame and front suspension. Debating doing something with it, or maybe selling the extra frame towards rebuilding this bike.

It has a "final drive issue", which I'm sure is the final drive pinion gear being stripped. I'll know tomorrow for sure. Already shopping for a replacement.... and at other bits.

as it sits....

Looks like it will be a fine project for the winter.

sounds like a good winter project - get it up and running and its a very reliable bike

how many miles on the odo? the final drive could be the pinion gear set in the the hub, or one of the 4 (or 5) splines in the drive shaft.

The pinion should last forever if its 80W oil bath is maintained. The splines can strip out if someone takes off the rear wheel (to change the tire) and wipes off the required 60% moly paste, and puts axle grease on it. The shaft will throw off axle grease and strip out the splines in a few thousand miles.

one of the members here posted a VS 650 for sale last week - He bought it for the engine, not sure if he wants to sell the whole rest of the bike or he is parting it out:

if you have to replace the pinion gear also check the mating spline gear inside the wheel itself - the half that stays in the wheel when you pull the final drive hub off.

Welcome from Houston, Texas. Great sounding project. I would suggest to start a thread in the Vstar section and post what issues you find and I'm sure you will get many suggestions. Here's a few interesting threads to check out when you get a chance.

Welcome from Atlantic Canada. Sounds like a good project and you found the best place for help and advice. Love to see some before and after pics once you get it up and running.

You're right near Valdosta, GA. I used to make a Tampa to Minneapolis drive quite often and was always glad to see the Valdosta signage after leaving FL to let me know I was making progress. Welcome.

LOL... yea. I grew up down here. Came back home after the army and have worked in Valdosta since day one of coming back. I tend to consider myself 18 miles too close to Floriduh.
