Hey Riders,

On my 2004 VStar 1100, about 50% of the time when I got to start it up I get a weird clunk sound when the engine is trying to turn over. When this happens the check engine light comes on, and if I just keep holding the ignition, it will go away and then start normally.

I thought it might be a problem related to too much "choke" or flooding the engine, but the mechanic mentioned I need to replace the starter clutch. I'm not too convinced with their answer, as I mentioned the starter clutch when I brought the bike in, and after watching videos I'm not getting the whirring sound that is indicative of that, just a loud clunk that sounds like the engine is seizing.

I will also occasionally get a similar clunk when turning the engine off. It might be related to turning off the bike without letting it cool down, but sometimes it happens even if I let it idle for a minute or so.

Anyone see anything similar? Was is the starter clutch?

I own and ride a 2001 1100 with 68000 miles on it, I do not use the throttle when starting the bike, just the TPS, when the bike got around 30k miles on it, it started the same clunking sounds. I had the starter clutch changed out and all was well for the next 30k miles and had to do the same thing again. My mechanic (Yamaha specialist) told me it was a common problem and the clutches and to expect to change them every 30k miles or so...I plan to put at least 100k on her before I get rid of her. So I figure I will change the clutch again around 90k....hope this helps,
