I don't quite get the mechanics of it, but yes the clutch adjustment will cause slipping. Specifically the lower operating rod. This is for the 1100. The FSM covers it well.
Did you follow the FSM instructions? I don't have a 650, but the 1100 version of the FSM give very detailed instruction on the adjustment. I'm guessing the 650 manual would too.
