Compression loss

130 Views 8 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  lesblank
Hey guys,
I have recently bought an '01 1100 with 35000 kilometers on it.
The bike cranks up and runs fine, little backfire on the front cylinder when cold but that cleans up once it is warm, I think it's the gas (what's left in the tank is from last year)
So recently I checked the valves and adjusted them, when I first did them they were too tight. After I did the valves and did a compression test both front and back cylinders are well below factory minimum.
What could cause the sudden loss of compression? It hasn't been further then a couple rips around town.
I am boggled on how well it runs, it shouldn't be running that good with 110psi and 90psi compression.
I did the valves according to the repair manual for the bike.

Are you preforming compression test holding the throttle full open and both plugs out while turning engine over several times?

Nope, plugs out, throttle closed.
Throttle should be wide open.
I will try that right now, I'll post results.

Well well well.
OK so hot engine and WOT it is even front and back at around 160 psi.
Why does it need to be WOT? Does it have to do with the CV carbs?
This is my first experience with this fuel system.
Great PSI! The test is done WOT to ensure adequate air is sucked in for correct reading.

That's the cool thing about this forum. There's years of hands-on experience that is openly shared to help others. Sometimes folks get busy and don't answer right away, but the answer will come.
