I have a 2009 950 and have done quite a few things to it, and in that process, I have mainly used common tools. These common tools include wrenchs, sockets and allen wrenchs. I realize that there are things that you will probably need some special tools for, and for those situations, I would recommend you buy or borrow them as needed, this will keep the cost of doing things down.
Being a 2016 model, there should not be much repair that will need to be done to the bike. I would recommend that your friend get a shop manual or manufacturer repair manual. I would recommend he review it to acquaint himself with the workings of the motorcycle and become acquainted with the location and nomenclature of the various parts on the bike. This is what I call "quality time" with my bike.
