i have 2000 vstar 1100 custom--i just went for a 100 mile ride today and within 5 miles of my house i noticed that my speedometer needle started bouncing between 60 and 40, then analog peedometer/blinker/high bean indicator, etc / display would shutoff, it would come on intermittently and then go back off, engine ran till i got home and shut it off , then nothing would come on again, not even a click when tried to start, no lights would come on either.

the battery is less than one year old

got any ideas on fixes

thanks

Does your battery have any charge/voltage? Check the ground connections both batt. and chassis.

Sounds like something to do with the battery. Cell shorted or loose wire not allowing the battery to charge, or possibly the voltage regulator or stator. I would also check the fuses, don't remember if there is one for the charging system.

Thanks for the reply Doug. Fuses and wires all checked out. I found a flow chart on line that had detailed instructions for testing the regulator/rectifier using a multimeter and it appears to be faulty. The R/R went bad a few years ago but it was overcharging the battery that time. Guess they just plain go bad periodically. Unfortunately they don't go out at the most opportune time....first time was in Licking, MO back in 04 when the bike had 20,000 miles on it, last night in Kenosha, WI at 70,000 miles.

Sorry to hear the regulator failed, at least it is not to expensive. I am still running my original one at 68k on my 06 1100, hope it does not fail.

Ive seen posts on Delphi boards about moving rectifier out into open air, to bleed off the damaging heat
