I went to start the bike last week. It was an early morning. Some drizzle and fog. I started to crank but it wouldn't start. Suddenly, a strong odor of gasoline. Under the bike was quite the puddle of gas. Son of a B.

Later that night I started my investigation. I took the air cleaner off and started to crank. Almost immediately there was gas pouring out of the carb overflow tube. Gas also appears to be leaking from a small hole at the bottom of the carb opening.

This has never happened. I find it a bit odd it occurred shortly after talking about carb puke. Except now its happening when cold. I tried turning the gas off and slowly back on but it just keeps pissing out that tube.

On a side note, I was getting an odd clunking from what seemed like the differential as I rolled it back and forth in neutral. I took the final drive sprocket cover off and found the nut was loose. After bending the tab of the lock washer I was able to take the nut off by hand. I tightened it back down and put the cover on. I'm still getting the occasional clunk down there but not as frequent. As far as I know the diff has never been worked on so I have no idea how that nut could have gotten loose.

Anyway, It doesn't seem like these two things could be even remotely related but I'd better ask anyway.

I included a photo with the problem areas circled in red. I tried to upload a video but couldn't.

Its a '99 Roadstar 1600

Thanks!

Your carb float needle valve is stuck open. You're gonna have to open up the carb and clean it out or possibly replace the needle and seat. I don't have any idea about the clanking noise but the pulley nut has been known to be loose. You are lucky you caught that before it came apart and tore something up.
