First time on the forum and just wanted to say hello. I bought my wife an 09 950 three weeks ago and i am looking for a place to kick around ideas. I tore the bike down the day it was dropped off so I can make it hers, officially. I will post pics when its all wrapped up. Few more pieces to be painted. Parts hold ups have been a problem. I have had many bikes over the years and this one has got a special place in my heart. So far very easy to work on and a blast to ride!

Hi Drkhrse00,
Welcome, I am pretty new here and to riding. Pretty ambitious to tear down a brand new bike. What kind of stuff are you doing to it?

Funny how people so much. I bought my 07 650 custom brand new and haven't done a single thing to it. I guess that is because I would not know what to do. It was only my second bike. I have been agonizing over the past few months to swap out my exhaust and re-jet the carbs.

Mechanically I am capable of doing this but very unsure of myself so it is refreshing to hear of people jumping right in without hesitation.

I would love to hear what you are doing and how it is all coming along.

My wife got tired of being a passenger and we both liked the 950 so we found an 09 at a local dealer. We decided that the chrome had to go. She wanted all black. So what was chrome is now black! Installed a set of Vance n Hines big shots after I powdercoated them. New programer and LAChoppers air cleaner. Got a lowering kit from PCS. Now just waiting on some lights to show up. Got rid of the factory taillamp and blinkers. I smoothed out the rear fender so no holes. Made a sidemount license plate bracket.I still need to paint the bars and run the wires internally as well as painting the lower fork legs. Its cold so it fills my riding time. My buddy had an 05 650 and we did the same thing to it! Great bike! sold really quick. Really easy to work on. The carbs just take patience in taking them apart.Im anxious to finish this one and get some pics posted.I have been messing with bikes since i was a teenager so this is old hat. spent alot of years cuttin up brand new stuff! Welcome to the wonderful world of two wheels!

Didn't know you could powder coat exhaust, but never really thought of doing that either. Sounds like a whole new bike, again. I am looking at the V&H cruizer exhaust. I need a little more performance out of my bike without going un-neighborly loud. 90% of my riding is commuting to work. I Like the way my bike looks, I haven't seen another 650 custom with the racing stripes down the tank.

A new programmer? I assume an engine control module Is the 950 fuel injected? Or is the programmer for something else? Or am I way out to lunch

I look forward to seeing your new bike.

i agree, it is interesting to hear of the exciting changes planned on your bike. i have an older bike, 2000 vstar 1100 custom. i have just done some cosmetic simple things to my bike to improve looks and funtionality and tried to minimize cost, since i doubt if i can get out the cost of upgrades if i resold it. i havent done any engine upgrades yet. i like my bike , just started riding, put about 2000 miles on in last 5 months, no bike issues yet. good to hear from you, keep us posted on changes and add some pics, ride safe.

The pipes made a big difference. Looks and performance wise! The 950 is fuel injected and its the first FI bike I have ever really messed with. Gone are the days of rejetting carbs. Wasnt thrilled with having to buy the programer. If I can do it myself I go that route. Very fortunate to have access to alot of equipment and products. We did a set of vance n hines on the 650 and it was a night and day difference as well. They arent too loud at idle but when you crack that throttle its sweet music. If you go that route you should enjoy it. Will make that commuting alot more fun!Really excited for my wife and MYSELF to start putting some miles on this 950. Thanks for the interest in the bike. I will Try and get some photos posted this weekend.
