Heya!

I joined because I'm considering a VStar in the near future! Hoping to get input on all aspects of them. We're going to do a bunch of weekend trips and need more comfort without breaking the bank.

Currently riding a 2003 Honda Blackbird (it is for sale!).

Thanks for letting me be part of this site.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Welcome from Houston, Texas. Which Vstar are you considering? New or used. Main use, daily, just weekends mentioned, etc.? Approximate carrying weight. All these questions will help with recommendations. We have a lot of valued riders of many models here so suggestion will follow. I commute daily on an 1100 classic with weekend trips with wife. About 325 pounds between us. Bike works great for daily use. Does very good on longer weekend trip. At times a little more power would be nice. Can get a little buzzy at sustained 80mph, here in Texas many 75 mph roads. Wife and I take several 400 plus day trips every year without issues. Keep us informed on what direction you are leaning toward.

Thanks for the welcomes!

I'm looking for weekend trips with my wife, but I will ride to work witch is only a short distance. We want more comfort than the Blackbird has to offer. It is a great bike, but not suited for 2up. Atleast not for us.

I'm really liking the VStar 1300. I've seen different versions. I rode my friends 2012 VStar 1300 and liked it! It had windscreen, hard bags, and sissy bar. I think my wife would like that!

1300 is pretty comfortable bike and definitely a good engine. My previous bike was Stryker with exact same engine, I had never had any issues with it. The only problem with the Stryker was a lack of 6th gear and low speed jerkiness, but V Star 1300 seems to have different gear ratios (I may be wrong though) and it rides a bit different (rode one on Yamaha demo truck day). More comfortable seat and seating position for sure. I'd get a fairing version of it if I was shopping for one.

If weight is not an issue - very good choice!

Hopefully some 1300 owners will chime in. I will tell you that if I were to change bikes today for a commuter / weekend ride it would be a 1300.

Welcome from the Maritimes and another 1100 rider. I agree with what les said about the 1100 and from what I've read the 1300 would make an excellent choice, or even the Road Star if you want to go a little bigger. You really can't go wrong with any of them. Like the others have asked, please post a pic of whichever one you choose.

Still looking! Got my eye on a NEW! 2015 1300 Tourer. Any thoughts, critics? Good , bad, otherwise? Still need to sell the Honda CBR1100XX though...

You stated you had ridden a 1300 before and liked it. I say buy it. Might want to make sure dealer understands that it's a three year bike, at least close to it, and be understanding if you bring in for warranty work. If fuel has been left in tank there might be some tank rust issues which might comprise fuel system. Has any oxidation started on any parts? Any vehicle sitting will age even sitting inside. Don't get me wrong, I would buy a left over model, just trying to make sure you inspect it very good. Keep us informed and good luck.

Hi Gary, and welcome from AZ.
I just recently bought a 1300 Royal Star.....and short of the little issue im having atm.....i LOVE this bike!! I walk at about 155-160lbs, wife is "slightly more".....and this bike is incredibly stable for its heavy size, especially at slower speeds and stops. Its actually more stable at those points than our V Star 650! With the uber wide front tire, it likes to follow the grooves in the road more.....but when two up, that is almost un-noticable. Overall.....is an excellent choice with the 1300. As i stated, at 155lbs, that big 780 (+/-)lbs is surprisingly easy to manage, and the extra power makes cruising two up even easier than single.
I would definitely go for it......and post some pics ;)

Enjoy, and ride safe and often :)

I agree with Les. If bike been sitting for 3 years it might have issues with seals, hoses, any other rubber parts that supposed to be lubricated when bike is running. Rubber tends to age and crack which means leaking seals and faulty hoses, etc. Just make sure you inspect it 100%. And check if it still has warranty left (I doubt though)

OK so...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!!!

Finally things are going my way. I sold my beloved Blackbird this week. Now on to different things. (I was going to say better, but I loved that bike too!)

I'm going next Saturday to look at a 2015 V Star 1300 Tourer! Very nice bike with only 6K on the clock. Lots of accessories already there. They are: 950 screen, light bar w/LEDs, passenger floor boards, luggage rack, engine case guards, wind deflectors!

Its a dealer asking $8000. I'm thinking of offering $7000 OTD. Whats any ones opinion?

950 is a nice bike.

you are paying mostly for the 3 - 4 year age of the bike. (the 2015 bikes came out out at the middle/end of 2014).

In Michigan I think a dealer will kiss your feet if you buy anything in January for $7000.

Only other thing I would consider, mileage is the best indicator of how much a MC is used-up. In the northern states you can get 1300s and 1700s with less than 10,000 miles on the odo for less than $5000, if you dont mind buying a bike that is several years old. A LOT of people buy big cruiser / touring bikes brand new, and hardly ride them at all, and sell them several years later. The only two things that seriously deteriorate over several years are the battery and the tires. Nothing in the drive train is wearing out parked in the garage. (make sure you are getting new tires and a new battery).

Not to throw a left turn in your plans, just something to think about.

Welcome to the forum! I ride a 950 V Star and it is an incredible bike. What I love most is the amazing balance it has. Riding the mountains here in Idaho, I especially enjoy that balance as I knife through the twisties. My son-in-law rides a 1300 and it is also a great bike. You won't go wrong on either bike. It depends on which one you feel fits you best. With either one, you'll probably want a good aftermarket seat. The stock seats aren't very comfortable on rides of any length. I absolutely love my Ultimate Seats. I have them front and rear, and I also have the backrest. Your caboose will be happy!
