Hey everyone,

Near the end of last season and all of this season to date, I've noticed a delayed hesitation when accelerating. It feels like a chain drive bike, with a slack chain, yet it's a shaft drive. As I'm driving down the road, if I let off the throttle, then crack the throttle again it will rev up and then jolt. This happens very quickly. Also, when hitting bumps, the bike will rev up a bit.

I took apart the rear end after reading the thread "Clangity Clang" and everything looked good:



So then I looked to the middle drive. The nut was already staked, and everything seemed great. Here's a video of me rocking the ujoint back and forth, with the bike in gear. I think this is normal right?

So now I really don't know what is wrong... I'm thinking the clutch is slipping. Does that sound like a possibility here?

Not knowing what kind of bike you have makes it really hard to help with much.

That's how it all began when my clutch started to go. It's makes sense when throttling back on in top gear because the clutch is working hardest on that gear. Somewhere in my confused mind, I actually tried to convince myself it was taking a moment to "spool up" because it was happening on a smaller bike.

Mine eventually started slipping in 3rd and 4th under very heavy acceleration. Before long it began happening under moderate acceleration, and even once in second gear before I was able to get in for replacement.

I'd suggest hammering on it a bit in third and fourth, with the understanding that if it is a slipping clutch, it's just a matter of time. Usually less rather than more. Clutch kit and labor for my V Star 650 was around $315ish.

Felt like a new bike afterwards though, I didn't realize how much differently I was riding the bike to avoid the slippage.

Thanks Pangea, I'm going to try adjusting the clutch first, then move on to replacement if needed.
