How critical is this 4000 miles valve adjustment on the V1300? Will most likely spring for either a 950 or leftover 1300 this weekend but this valve check is a bit concerning. The 950 goes 16K between checks and hell, my FZ1 goes 26K before a check. What is the deal with this kind of engineering as it seems both the 950 and 1300 use the same type 4V head with roller rockers. This harkens back to the old Ducati days of 3500 miles valve adjustments and today even Ducati goes until 7500. I am thinking of buying the 1300 - much bigger displacement for 2-up riding, twin disc up front, more appealing instruments and a comfy ride but may sacrifice all this if maintainence costs seem to high. If I do get the 1300 I am thinking a first adjustment at 1000 then a follow up at 7500 and then be done with it and knowing me I will most likely have sold the bike by then! What do the enlightened techs amoung you think? Bunk or not? Thanks

Valves

I see the owners manual does call for checking valve clearance every four thousand miles. My stratoliner calls for valve check every 16,000 miles. I actually did the checks after 600 miles and again after 32,000 miles. The mechanic said he actually made "Little or no adjustments." I suspect you results would be the same. You would need to decide but I feel valve checks are way over emphasized.

Maybe some others will give us their experience.

Hey Dave, been following your post and believe you are pretty straight , and know some things, I very much agree with what you are trying to get across on the valve adj, I have been told by the Yam guy, he VERY seldom has to adj valves, he also said it depends on high rev on how the valves goes, I don't know, I'm no mech, just an old school guy, besides my 1100 vstar, have an old 750 Virago that had 35000 when I thought I'd have em checked, all ok. Would not advise anyone to neglect things, but do what you feel is the right thing to do. Ride safe..........
