It cranks but wont start

Hi folks, I'm new to the forum and could use a bit of help getting the 950 back on the road.
I have just changed the fuel pump assembly, and the bike started and ran fine for the first evening. Two day after riding with the new (used take off ) fuel pump I went to start the bike and it would not start. it will turn over, just wont start.

This is what I have checked.
spark plugs are dry and in good condition,
all fuses are good.
New gel battery w/ 230 cranking amps
new fuel in tank
new tps
sprayed starter fluid in intake, no start.
checked fuel lines and they are connected properly.

I'm having a hard time understanding the codes
I checked my diagnostic codes, and I get a D:01 with a 12 underneath that.
Is that telling me that the tsp indicator at 12 is fully open, or is the number 12 referring to the crank position sensor?

I have taken this as far as I can go on my own, and could sure use some help from a more knowledgable Star owner.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

not familiar with the 950 but I'd suggest the first step is to determine whether the "no start" is caused by a lack of spark or lack of fuel/fuel mixture, then troubleshoot from there. You can buy a cheap in line spark tester at Harbor Freight or remove plugs and ground tip with plug wire attached and see if there is spark in the electrode gap when you crank.

Can you hear your fuel pump cycle on when the ignition key is turned into the on position?

Thanks for the help guys,
The fuel pump cycles as it should when the key is turned on.
I was told that if you sprayed starting fluid in the throttle body and the bike starts, then the problem is electrical. i don't know if that is correct or not.
I'll do as dmil123 suggested and check the spark at the plugs and get back with you on the result.
Thanks,
JimmyClyde
I removed the battery and made sure it has a full charge. Tried to remove the codes by putting the pos and neg wires from the battery together to drain any stored electricity, and cause the codes to be removed. that did not work, however the first code now reads D:01 with a number 11 underneath. does that mean anything to any of you?
Thanks,
JimmyClyde
One more thing I may have learned today was to enter diognostic mode and scroll up to D:61 it showed a 6 which tells me there have been 6 error codes during the life of the bike ( codes have never been cleared ) when I go to D:63 it shows 00 which is telling me that there are no current codes. I think this info is correct based on a youtube video I watched.
I will report back on any progress I make until I get her on the road again. I really hate it when people say they will followup and then leave us all hanging as to weather the advice of forum members helped.
I will let you know how things go and what the fix is.

If you spray starting fluid & it starts, it means you have ignition but no fuel. You can access a 950 service manual on this forum, need to check fuel pressure to the injectors & troubleshoot from there.

Can anyone tell me where the obd2 port is for my xvs 950. I need to buy and adaptor and dont know if it is a 4 5 or 6 pin plug or something else.
Thanks for your help
Well, I told you all I would report back and so far I have no good news. After searching for a YDT (Yamaha Diagnostic tool) or adaptable scanner I found out the YDT is only available to dealers, and all after market scanners only service from 2016 and up. I decided to take my bike to the Yamaha dealer to have them run the codes and clear all the old codes. If the fix was not a major problem I was just going to let them take care of fixing it. After about 10 minutes standing at the service counter a tech arrived to ask what I needed. When I told him the problem he said that he couldn't help me. He said the dealership has a rule that they won't work on any bike that is 10 years old or older. I said that if they didn't want to work on it that was OK, but could they at least run the codes and clear the old codes so I could get started fixing it. He said maybe you didn't understand we don't work on bikes made before 2013, I can't help you and turned and walked away. This will most likely be the last Yamaha I ever own, and it still wont start!

Almost every dealer has the 10 year rule, not just yamaha. I can understand their reasoning, but don't like it. This 10 year rule is why many independent repair shops flourish.

Per the link in the 2nd post, code 12 is the crank position sensor which will prevent the bike from starting. That link includes the steps to troubleshoot and diagnose its problem.
@dmil123 I figured out what the D01- 12 error code was I mentioned. the 12 represents where the number your throttle position sensor is at with a closed throttle.
As I said I was having a hard time getting my head around the three code charts I have.
@lesblank I've taken it as far as I can go, so it's time to take it to a professional.

I live about 20 miles south of Jonesboro Arkansas, does any one know a good independent bike shop in my area? Memphis Tn falls in that area. its about 75 miles down the road.

I understand if the guy that sold this bike does not want to work on it after I've had it for 10 years.
Since they are the only ones around that have the YDT scanner I thought they might run codes for me.
I Asked Jonesboro Cycle to run my error codes and clear the old error codes so I could get a handle on what was going on. ( I know it's something little that I am just missing, and I'll prolly feel like a idiot when someone figures it out)
Anyway the tech was kind of a jerk about it when he said WE WONT DO ANYTHING to your bike. I know he wanted to say... It's my YDT and you cant use it for you old 2009 yammi
Just because your the only game in town doesn't mean you have to act like it

It still may be my TPS as the the open throttle number only goes to up to 101. and I think it needs to be 106 or better.
Does that sound right?
I have 2 TPS, I guess I should check them against each other to see if they read the same.
Thanks for your help guys.
Do I understand correctly that when the ECU is reset it will take all settings back to factory spec? That may be all I need to find the problem
Sorry @JimmyClyde but I am totally unfamiliar with the 950 electronics. Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will jump in with feedback. Wish you luck... Hope the fix is simple.
