Hi, I just purchased a used 2012 V-Star 1300 Tourer and I love it. The only concern I have with the bike is When down shifting into second or first gear to make a corner it gets very jerky especially when you accelerate out of the corner. This is my first belt drive bike, is this normal? Is the belt loose? I'd take any info on this I can get. Thanks.

I cant advise you on the belt drive, my 650 is shaft driven

but I normally take corners in 3rd gear, 2nd gear if I have to slow down to 10 to 15 mph.

I never shift down into first unless I have to stop or slow to a crawl (less than 3mph).

even still something is not right or something is loose. The bike should not jerk.

Welcome to the forums..

Common issue for the 1300..fuel cut off by the ecu for emissions.. A fuel controller will help reduce it but not as well as having the ECU reflashed by Ivan. Best mod for your bike performance for the price.

Great place to start with improving your Vstar 1300. Read his philosphy on tuning and you'll be quite impressed if you go for it.

Lots of posts on Delphi Forums Login*-*Welcome! Please log in. and on here as well regarding the reflash. Mine is done and love it. One of the things it does is eliminate the off throttle jerkiness. You can control it to a degree with clutch and throttle control but it not like the reflash will do.

This^^^^^^^^^^^ The ECU flash is absolutely a must the bike is completely different after the flash in a great way.

Yes send the ECU To Ivan, if you are going to do pipes and intake do them while the ECU is out and make sure to tell them what mods you have or are doing so they can tune for them.

I don't have the re-flash yet, but it is on my list. In the mean time I have Jack's O2 mod. If you can find one for sale, it will help with the surging.

The reflash might help. I took a 1300 for a test ride at Thunder in the Valley a couple years ago and one of the things I didn't like about the bike was that in first and second gears there is a significant amount of drive line lash. At slow speed and parking lot manuevers you don't really want the jerking when on and off the gas. It didn't seem to be apparent in the higher gears. I don't think it has anything to do with it being a belt. I had a Roadstar and there was little drive line lash or drive line noise with the bike. It was two things I liked about it.

It can skip under acceleration... Mine was loose when i got it and it felt like a studder when you got on the throttle hard.. turned out to be slack in the belt. Thankfully i got it looked at fairly quickly.. a skipping belt can be unnerving and costly if it goes.. Been 3 years so i think I am good :)

The Ivan’s ECU flash is the best money I spent on the bike. I also did the intake and slip on and it’s amazing what it did.

Also, feathering the clutch and get the rpms up a bit will help.

The drive line slack I experienced was under light throttle. A very loose belt would only likely jump a tooth under moderate to hard throttle. I believe the 1300 has too much slack in the gear train and not the final belt drive. I believe if you do a search you will discover it is a complaint with the bike. Better fueling might help some by moderating how the engine responds to light throttle on and off. A friend has a FZ9 and has spent significant $ trying to fix fueling problems with it being lurchy on and off throttle. It has a chain final drive. I still don't think he is satisfied with it and usually rides it in rain mode which softens the throttle response. He had the ECU reflashed and bought another fix from Austrailia that fools the oxygen sensor to richen the fueling.

I can't address the VStar 1300 specifically but I too am on my first belt driven bike. Mine felt a little loose so I brought it into a shop and watched them tighten it so I can do it on my own next time. Noticeable difference with no slack in the belt. Very smooth acceleration and deceleration when adjusted properly. Plus I understand correct tension will save on wear and tear. Get a belt tension gauge so you're not guessing about how tight the belt should be. Got mine on Amazon for about $18.

Maybe he needs to check this out for the ECU reflash and get it working properly :)
