Is it really necessary to apply a conditoner to my k&n air filter after I have cleaned it? 2003 V Star 1100 classic.

Conditioner? It is necessary to re-oil the filter. K&N makes a special oil for the purpose. You can get a clean and recharge kit at most Auto Parts Stores. Autozone, O'Reillys, Pep Boys and the like.

I bought a different brand cleaner from a cycle shop but did not get a recharger. Would that be sold as a K&N product at an auto parts store?

I have the kit. I think the oil is sold separately, but I'm not sure. There may also be other brands. Just ask at the counter. I also seem to remember that the K&N oil isn't a petroleum oil, something about it not being harsh or damaging to the natural fibers in the filter. Just found this.

"K&N air filter oil is a compound of mineral oil blended with special polymers to form a very efficient tack barrier. Red dye is added to show just where you have applied the oil."

Yes you should re-oil the filter. and a kit will do it many times over. But any lite weight oil will work the same.

You could probably get mineral oil at Walmart.

I have 70+year old tractors with oil bath filter. The paper boys in the 50's made them unpopular. K&N added new technology. Paper boys becoming unpopular. K&N is 100yr old GOOD technology.

A K&N filter without oil is like having no filter at all. You will ruin your engine.
