This is my first street bike so I am learning where I can.

2002 V Star 1100 with 38K Miles. Baffles removed from pipes.

When starting the bike in the morning it will release a loud pop on the first crank. The backfire sound is as loud as a gunshot. It does not seem to matter if the choke is on or off, I cant seem to determine what causes it. It happens about 75% of the time on the first startup.

Also of note, the bike does a bit of backfiring while riding when I decelerate.

I have not gotten into the mechanics on the bike other than changing the oil, replacing the tires and rear shock. Any information would be appreciated.

Believe it or not, this sounds "normal" The lack of baffles is a major contributor to this popping. During start-up I think the 1100 has a compression release so it will push some unburnt fuel/air mixture into the exhaust. With or without baffles, it happens, but without baffles, it also affects your neighbors piece and quiet.
