I have a 2005 Vstar 650 that is making a whirring sound in all gears. The sound goes away as soon as I pull the clutch in. It was suggested that it sounded like a middle shaft problem. I did some research on the nut coming loose on the middle shaft but it appears that this is a problem on 1100s. Is it a problem on 650s too? If so, does the 650 have the speedo sensor hole through which you can inspect the nut to see if it is tight? If it does, where is it located?

Could it be final drive splines need lubing?

I've done some more research. Could it be that the final drive splines need to be lubed? I would guess that they only have lube from factory which I understand may have been minimal.

When I changed my rear tire on my 650, I pulled the drive shaft to inspect and I found that there was no grease on it. I got some grease from a friend so I don't remember what kind it was but it takes special grease but not much. Just a dab will do you.
