I know the placement of the VS 1300's oil filter causes many folks a headache. Tough / near impossible to get a traditional oil-filter wrench on it. Some "caps" work, some don't, etc.

Although I always use K&N filters with the 17mm head on them, I had to get the old no-bolt filter off my new 1300.

This little tool did the trick. Fits onto any 3/8" wrench and fits most motorcycle-size filters. I've had it for years and it's great. You just pull it open and slip it over the filter. Then the harder you crank on it, the tighter it gets.

"cam action" oil filter wrench. I bought mine at Pep Boys probably 10 years ago.

Autozone has one for $6. But that one says it fits filters 2.5" - 3.125" diameter only. Mine runs 2.75" - 3.75". Check if the smaller one would fit your chosen filter... If not you may want to look for a bigger one.

ONLY time it's failed is when the filter was all oily and slippery, the 'jaws' would slip before there was enough torque to clamp them down - best to clean it up with Simple Green or similar if that's the case.

Note that it will NOT tighten a filter, only loosen... I always use K&N's with a bolt-head on the end, so not sure how you'd tighten a "round end" filter on a 1300.

Amazon has the larger size one: Search for Lisle wide-range filter wrench.

You may find some with three smaller "grips" on them - I tried that type and didn't like it. I suggest stick with the "Lisle" style ones with two big grabbers...

I have that same filter remover. For some reason I had a hard time getting it to fit in between the filter and the surrounding casing around it. Maybe a tight space on my 950? But I'm still new at this! And it did work.

On my 1300 (similarly tight space), it really only fits on one way; once on it can rotate, but putting it on there was really only clearance in one orientation. I also found it far easier to have the ratchet-head attached as I put it on rather than trying to 'plug it in' afterward.

This tool actually worked perfect on my Jeep Wrangler. First time I've ever done it. My V Star 950 was my very first oil change on ANY vehicle whatsoever!

It's all in having proper tools. Like this filter remover wrench. And also the handle off an old ax gave me some extra force to push against the ratchet handle in order to loosen the drain bolt! (May not be strong, but I'm smart!) Ha!
