This damn 1996 with 10,000 miles is being a pain. Oil leak at the final drive with the good ol mess on the rim and tires happens. Change EVERY seal, main and outer on the plate, drain plug washer and made sure breather valve isnt gunked up...torqued to specs and STILL slinging oil. Any thoughts?

your engine is different from my 650, but my bike starting to put a few drips on the garage floor near the kickstand. There was oil on the front of the drive shaft, on the covers, the back of the engine, like the drive shaft was flinging it all over.

I thought for sure it had to be the drive shaft seal coming out of the engine.

turns out it was the tappet cover o-ring all the way up on the head. After I soaped the back of the engine and washed the oil off everywhere, then it was clear where it was oozing out.

Luckily engine oil and gear oil usually smell dramatically different. Smell the oil that has gotten onto your rims and wheels and compare it to the gear oil in your drive and your engine oil. As KCW pointed out, an oil leak can appear far from it's point of origin.
