I have a 2009 V star 950...it had 500 miles on it when I bought it and has start spitting and sputtering. The guy that I got it from used a pipe to hammer out the end of the stock baffle, to make it louder....is that the problem? Or is the fuel filter stopped up? It originally started, only if I tried to gas on it to pass someone and slowly worked it's way up to where I can't get enough throttle to even ride it now. I run ONLY, non-ethanol gas and I use fuel treatment also....where should I start?

I am not familiar with the 950. You can download a shop manual with the link attached. I might suggest checking for vacuum leaks btwn the throttle body and cylinders, check the fuel pressure on the fuel injector rail and inspect the plugs to get a read on tuning. You possibly have a problem with the fuel regulator, fuel pump or filter. Also, check your gas cap to make sure it is venting.

the previous owner punched out the disc in the muffler that lets more sound through. would have no effect on the bike's performance, a lot of owners did that for a cheap mod, including me on my '09 950. with only 500 miles on an old bike something is most likely gummed up. echo on the gas filter/pump. also, it most likely needs a fuel line recall service performed on it. i recommend calling up a local dealership and giving them the VIN and they can tell you if it's been done and perform it for free if it hasn't.

When I bought my 09 950 wasn't long my bike got sluggish on the throttle. Bike was used but looked new with only 3900 mi. Come to find out fuel pump was going out. Maybe bike sat up too long or it was the gas I just put in it had a little water in it. After running a couple of tanks of non ethanol through it nothing changed. Only got worse. Had fuel pump change and it ran like a charm. Just my experience.
