Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to say "Hello" and introduce myself. My name is Wil, I'm 5'8" at a svelte :D 290lbs, and I used to ride dirt bikes many years ago. With the gas prices rising ridiculously now, I am looking to get onto the pavement with my first cruiser. So far, I have a few options in mind, a 2009 V Star 1300, a 2009 Suzuki M90, or a 2011 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Classic SE. These are all sub-$10k bikes but so far, I'm inclined to get the M90 because of the powerhouse that it comes with. However, I do like the V Star 1300 so I'm still trying to decide which to choose. My girlfriend will be riding with my occasionally so the Vulcan may be underpowered.

And just so you know, unless I need to take my truck or ride in my GF's SUV, this bike will most likely serve as my daily mode of transportation.

Anyway, hope to hear your feedback on my options for a first bike. And if you have other suggestions, please feel free to share them.

Thanks in advance!

WELCOME to our group of fun and knowledge base (notice "fun" came first).
For a few pennies more, consider the Stratoliner...well a bucket load of pennies more.
On anything else you'll keep staring at the M90, on the Strat, M90 guys will stare at you.

Welcome Wil !

the choice will not be easy among the models that you like.

I think the Vstar would be best (I love Stars). And then, there is a proverb here which says: "if you ride for Suzuki, do not forget your toolkit" :D (well, I know, it does not rhyme but, in French, it rhymes :))

Welcome aboard Wil. I just went through those same decisions and I have to say that I love my Star the most. These are very dependable, comfortable bikes. Hell, mine is 2000 and is still running strong with only maintenance performed. If you choose the Star, stick around and you'll have a few laughs with us too!

Thanks for the welcome greetings and your feedback. It's very much appreciated.

Just an update, I have another Star bike to add to the mix. It's a brand new 2007 V Star 1100 Custom that I discovered at a local Yamaha dealership near me. He has it tagged with an "Out-the-door" price of $8800 which includes tax and licensing. And, they do have it in both colors available for the 2007 model year, raven and red.

Now I haven't done much research into this bike but with that price tag, what do you guys think? Is it considered a great deal? Or should I just look away? Unlike the 1300 model, this 1100 is air-cooled and it uses carburetors instead of fuel injectors. If you have comments about the 1100, please share.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing from any one of you... Cheers!

$8,800 for a bike that's been sitting for 4 years is WAY too much. No wonder it's been sitting for 4 years. That dealer needs to get a clue.
You can do much, much better than that. Keep looking.

Just my two cents, but I found a 97 Harley Sportster on Craigs List for $4000 with only 413 miles on it. I was really tempted but when I thought about the seals probably being no good and all the work that it would take to make sure the bike was ok I ran. $8800 for a bike that's been sitting for 4 years is way to high since I had a dealer here offer my wife a 2010 for $7000.

Hi Jarhead,

$7000 for a 2010? What model was the offer for? Based on your name, I'm assuming an 1100. =) Anyway, I've been doing research via Cycle Trader and the best deal I've found was for a red 2009 V Star 1100 Classic with an out-the-door price of approximately $8200. I'm going to continue shopping around but what do you think?

Here's a pic of the bike...

I'll give you a hint:

I only had room for "AUSSI" :D:D
:D:

That reminds me of the tattoo I got advertising Shorty's Bar & Grill, Chattanooga, Tennessee...(they DID have to leave off "USA" though...)

You should have been there Wart: they needed a short order cook...(I think it was cook...maybe...ah hell...can't remember...:))

Aussie only has one prison tattoo in honor of his mother...an "M" on both cheeks so that when he...opens his mouth...there it is:D:D:D
