Hello All,
I have a 2002 Vstar 1100 custom that I've gone completely through but im stumped. My speedometer/odometer will not function. I've already replaced the speed sensor and the toothed yoke ring is prestine. All other dashboard functionality id there. All lights, indicators work. I'm at a loss other than trying another speedometer cluster. Thoughts?

does the odo do anything? is it mechanical or an LCD, and if its an LCD does it show the total miles on the bike?

If the speed sensor is electronic I assume the odo is an LCD?

I would buzz out the cable from the sensor to the gauge cluster with a Volt-ohm meter, to make sure all the wires connect thru.

If you dont have the wiring diagram the yamaha service manual for your bike is easy to find online in pdf format as a free download. The wiring diagram is near the back of the manual, and will tell you which wires to check from end to end.

could just be a corroded pin on one of the connectors.

and dont forget to check the ground wire (usually black) in the cable.

EDIT:now that I think about it, if you can see the wires on both ends, just check each color wire end to end.

If you have a meter put it on ohms. Touch the leads together and it should read near 0 ohms (not exactly but close)

then check the wires from the cluster to the unplugged sensor one by one. They might read a few ohms end to end, but if the meter reads open or hundreds or thousands of ohms, the cable or connector pin is bad or corroded.

Might want to disconnect the battery ground wire first, if you put some ohm meters across the battery it will damage the meter.

Thanks for your service. The rider course was a great idea. I had a simular situation a few years ago with speedometer. I also replaced the sensor also and still didn't fix problem. I had tested mine and was getting signal about 50% of the time. The wheel looked good, but wasn't. While testing new sensor it was getting reading on half the wheel rotation but not the other half. Turn out to be some kind of contamination that must have been thrown up by tire onto speed sensor wheel. I cleaned the sensor wheel with brake cleaner and it worked after that. Have you tested the reading you are getting out of sensor? Here's the testing procedure. Keep us informed on your progress.

check the wire from the speed sensor like kcw said.... there is a 5 amp fuse in line with the main fuse coming off the battery. i think it powers the speed sensor and the trip meter. can you switch between mileage and trip mileage... the lights signals and engine light looks like is powered separetly

I'll look into all of it. The wheel should not be contaminated as i bought it new and preclesned it before install. I'll look into the wiring and fuses. Is it possible the spedo is just bad? No one has mentioned that as a possibility.

Yes the speedometer can be bad. But to me testing is free (except time). I try to test all I can before I spend money.

So Im getting continuity through all wires from the speed sensor thriuh the harness to the speedometer. The sensor throws voltage during the test listed above. Looks like i need a speedometer, which I'm told is common with the LCD type spedos. Anyone got one?
