Hi Chief! I think people need to see this in BOLD....If you have NOT paid for the MAP updates...DO NOT update this firmware for your 2018!!!! It will screw it up...and you can only hope that you can then go back to 12.0.6. But...you may get locked out of a earlier 'update'. So...unless you have bought the $100.00 map updates...there actually is NO FIRMWARE UPDATE for the 2018 without you needing to shell out $100.00 for a little map database. Better as some have said...to sink that first $100.00 into a true stand alone GARMIN, that has unlimited and constant updates for the rest of the products life....a much better use of your GPS guidance $$$ strategy. Just sayin'... "So sad, that for the 2018 rider/owner with the bike as purchased...that the only update...is not features...but a compatibility shoe in, for the map database...and YOU HAVE TO SHELL OUT FOR IT. " So disappointing, regarding Yamaha. Everybody ride as much as you can...and Ride...to Ride Again! Always...
Hello Hunter,
Bringing the thread back to infotainment software update!!!
Have you had a chance to check out the new software? Any news or just opinion to share?
Thank you,
Gary
I did both the map update and 12.2 upgrade today. The main thing I learned was that this bike doesn’t seem to want to see a usb resource beyond 16 gb. Had trouble till I shrunk the usb partition.
Maps update took about 15 mins, 12.2 took about 10. Riding to work this week so will report any worthwhile observations. I haven’t used the Nav extensively and didn’t have major complaints when I did, so, you’ll likely want to take my comments with a very tiny grain of powdered ethanol.
Hey @Cliffieg, it might be different whether you’re doing a software update vs music. I use a 32GB for my music plugged into USB1 right front.
On another note, I also finished map update and software update today.
Didn’t get much of a test though. Only a short ride to pick up 2 XL pizzas! And yes they fit in the trunk without having to angle them. Gotta love this bike!
Hi Tony,
Have you been able to test/exercise the SVTC after the latest map & software update?
I have not seen a write up or commentary on any changes noticed.
Thanks,
Gary
How do I confirm the map version on my Eluder? The Dealer says they updated the maps, and the code was already scratched off the card and has the web site says it's been redeemed. But, before I put a potentially troublesome firmware udpate in, I'm in "trust but verify" mode. I was poking through the bajllion or so screens on the infotainment system, but couldn't find a spot that told me the map version.
I just went through the same thing, my dealer said they had installed the most up to date version, but it had the original build version. Don't fool around with trying to download the Yamaha Toolbox to do the 12.0.6 update, use the web link shown in #1 post on this thread, or here is a link to my recent thread that may be useful to read. Navigation Upgrade Steps
I have the SVTC and this is how I confirm the nav software version. Notice I am on the older version before what is out now.
Go to the settings, then be sure you are in General section, then navigate or scroll down to System Info. Select System info and you should see the software version for the navigation unit.
If you watch Gariders on youtube it may help. You have to go to the General tab and scroll down 2 or 3x to the system info, it is the last button. This will show the current version you have installed on bike. As I said, dealer told me everything was updated to newest version, but look at my #1 post on the link I gave you, that is what my version on the bike was when I picked it up.
Did find that ("HMNA15Q4..."), and decoded it to mean the map date was 2015Q4. the toolbox claims 2018Q4 is the latest, so it looks like I need the update. It would be cool if part of the fingerprinting process was to get the current version, then toolbox could tell you if there's an update available.
Did you read my link? The first time I downloaded the Yamaha Toolbox and did the first fingerprint, the Toolbox knew I needed an update and the update button was enabled and available. My problem was the USB stick was to small to download the 12.0.6 update. After I made another fingerprint on the correct size USB, the update button was grey out, like I had already done the update (even though I didn't). I think it's is suppose to recognize that there's an update available, but something in the software is flaky. If you looked at my pictures of the system info before and after the 11.xx to 12.0.6 upgrade, the Map ID is the same. This upgrade is the system software, not the actual map. You have to pay $100 for the upgraded map, before you can update the system software to the most current 12.2.0.
Yes, I did. the problem I was having was that I expected the map updater tool (Yamaha Toolbox) to be a little more explicit, since it requires a fingerprint from the bike. Once it started up and ready the USB stick, I kinda expected something like "Your map is dated 2015 Q4, and the latest available is 2018 Q4", or similar. Once I sorted out that a portion of the map ID tells me the vintage of the map on the bike (2015Q4), and saw in the tool box program the date of the latest update (2018Q4), downloading and applying it was not a big deal. Again, just expected the toolbox to be more intuitive.
It's a little annoying that there's separate tools for map updates (Yamaha Toolbox) and system firmware updates (Yamaha MotorSports Link). I updated the firmware to 12.06 (the one that does not require updated maps), then used Yamaha Toolbox to download and install the 2018Q4 map, and am now downloading the 12.20 firmware update from the above link and will apply it tomorrow. BTW, doing all on a single 8GB Sandisk USB stick that I'm just re-formatting between operations.
I had discussed this topic with my dealer and thought that they were going to take care of it all prior to me taking it home. Obviously they did not, but I'm not going to make too big a deal out of it. Between the current Yamaha cash off promotion, and the dealer wanting to move it off the floor after 18 months, I practically stole this bike. I'll bring it to their attention, because the code for the "free" update had been scratched off and used. But perhaps they did that well before I bought the bike; I don't know.
Anyways it's all sorted out now, and I'm getting more acquainted with the bike. Thanks to everyone for their input.
I think we're talking about the same things, software update issues. My understanding about the maps is there is the original build maps 2015, and the only update that came available you have to pay for, which kind of sucks. I didn't pay for the upgraded map yet, but I probably will and then get the latest system upgrade. If you run into any unexpected issues, let me know.
I agree the price and extra offerings were the main reason I bought the bike, I wouldn't have spent 24k for the original retail because I'm to cheap. Beside all the things you mentioned, who would expect a 5 year warranty, I just got my extended 4 years in the mail. I think this standard warranty is 1 year, and originally I think you payed extra for the extended warranty. I was just reading about the extra 4 years, it covers everything the 1 year covers. and it's not like a lot of car extended warranty's that are through a 3rd party, this is directly through Yamaha. You do need to keep good records if you do any of your own maintenance so you don't void warranty if you have a claim.

I previously owned had a 2009 vStar 950, and I bought the extended warranty for it. About 2 years and 26K miles in, it developed a small oil leak around the front pulley. I took it to the dealer, and Yamaha made good on everything. Turns out a bearing had been pressed into the case the tiniest little bit out of square. The worst part was being without the bike for 4 weeks waiting for parts, fortunately it was toward the end of the season. The only cost to me was $20. The repair job meant dropping the motor and splitting the case. Since they had it torn down anyway, I sprung for a new set of rings that it probably didn't need.
