New vstar 950 owner

I'm a new (to me) owner of a 2009 vstar 950, with 7800 km on the clock. I've read the stories about the red dust, and have my own ideas. Has anyone welded the pulley to the shaft, and in addition has anyone machined the rear hub to bring the rear pulley closer in line to the output shaft on the engine, and the repair for this item, I'm assuming it requires splitting the case. Thanks in advance.

Welding the sprocket would transfer heat to the seal with a strong possibility of melting it making it leak. I know several who have pinned the pulley with good results.

So it looks to me in the picture that holes were drilled and pins inserted. Were they chilled prior to fitting, and how does the pulley stay on the shaft as I don't see any threads. Sorry, I'm mechanically inclined but sometimes can be a little slow on the uptake.
The picture I posted was just an example. Can't find the pictures I took of friends 950 that he did it to. He just drilled the holes very carefully, then cut pin so it was flush. The stock washer covers the pins. The pins are to keep the pulley from spinning on shaft. Many automotive crank pulleys are secured this way on race applications. Below is a 950 front drive pulley.

Ok, gotcha. Thank you for the advice, and knowledge.
