I'm new on here and hoping for some advice from more experienced Yamaha owners. I'm British, but living in Spain. I have owned mostly Kawasaki 1500's for the last 20 years, but I am now looking to move to a large displacement Yamaha. I cannot decide between the XVS1100 V-Star (known as 'Dragstar' in Europe) or the 1300 V-Star. I'm not sure whether the 1300 is just a larger version of the same engine. I know that the 1100 is a single pin crank, so I assume the 1300 is too. Surprisingly, many people seem to prefer the 1100 over the 1300. If anyone can help me with the differences between these two models please.

Welcome from Houston, Texas . I've only owned an 1100 and it's a great bike. The 1300 is like a big brother to the 1100. Engine is totally different. One major difference is the 1300 has fuel injection and is better suited for two up and longer distance riding. Here's a few interesting threads to check out when you get a chance.

Hi Kalbo,
Welcome to the forum from East Tennessee. Les is correct and the 1300 is fuel injected with excellent brakes and easily rises two up. Let us know what you decide on share some pics after you bring it home.

If you're used to a 1500, you might find the 1100 a little lacking at highway speeds. It will cruise comfortably at 120km/h, but probably not as smoothly as the bigger bikes. Mine works good for solo riding, and I've grown used to how it works at speed (it's not a long stroke engine and revs higher than I expected). But with my wife on back (combined weight about 375lbs), it would be nice to have just a little more. We'd like to do a little touring and adding luggage to the mix would definitely stress its limits on the highway. I can't speak for the 1300 as I've never ridden one, but those extra couple of hundred ccs and the liquid cooling should make a significant difference.
