Discussion Starter #1
2003 V-Star 1100 Custom, starter goes and goes but I get no spark and the engine doesn't crank. No blown fuses, battery good. Replaced the CDI and coils because I had known working extras with no change in behavior. I didn't have bits with me to take the case off and test, but based on reading I'm assuming at this point it is the starter clutch. Is that the next logical assumption? Have I missed anything? I'm grabbing a repair manual this week.

Assuming it is the starter clutch, has anyone had luck with an aftermarket kit rather than the OEM? I could definitely use the extra cash to rebuild the carbs while I have the bike in pieces.

Thanks!

Most all info points to OEM being the best choice, as ya just don't know what you're getting otherwise. Best to just pay the extra cash and save yourself the aggravation of having to do it twice. Just my $.02.

I say Yamaha had many years to fix this issue and they never did.

Yamaha failed to fix this issue. Even the "new" version from the factory has a high failure rate. Yes, much of it is operator error. Still, I saw no point in going back with parts that failed after only 7000 miles ( I bought it with a bum starter and only 7000 miles). A parts failure is a time for an upgrade in my book.

I put in this kit 2 years ago and I'm happy I did:

after a failed start if you don't wait for the engine to come to a complete stop and engage the starter the starter clutch bearing race cracks usually from the engine rolling backwards at the same time you try to start it. so ether hold the starter until it starts or make sure the engine is absolutely stopped before trying again. they sell a heavy duty after market starter clutch for 1100s but i have not checked any reviews as to how much better it actually is
