I have a v star 650 custom 05 that was running good till in the middle of a ride it started to run ruff and now it will idle with choke or without choke on though it's a little better with it on but stumbles and stalls if you give it any gas. I pulled the carbs and cleaned the jets check for vacuum leaks including the intake boots with no luck. Earlier the summer I replaced the stator and rectifier so that checks out good still. I did pull the plugs and they are clean and dry. I am usually pretty good mechanical but currently baffled. Any ideas?

I'm guessing on your problem because I'm just not there, but here's a similar problem that was solved on these forums last year.

Seems like it's worth a peek.

There are also two diaphragms on the parts diagram. One looks like it's for a needle valve, the other looks like an accelerator pump. I am NOT familiar with these carbs at all. I'm just trying to keep things bumped until someone who knows better chimes in.

Here's series of videos for your exact model if you have some spare time: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL48404C6B7E5374E8

I had read that thread the other day not really match this problem. Starts fine idles smooth. Checked what he was talking about anyway and not the same problem.

I don't know. From here it sounds like needle jets aren't coming off the seat like maybe a blown diaphragm, no vacuum, dirt, varnish, etc. like what you've already looked for. You said the plugs were clean and dry, too.

Ok still messing with this thing. Got it back together after fidgeting with this and that and seem a little better but it still won't consistently rev up unless I put my hand over the air filter hole and and monitor the airflow with my hand

http://www.iwt.com.au/mikunicarb.htm.there is a lot of info out there. the carbs are pretty basic.you can check for an air leak with spray carb cleaner around the intake boots and any rubber connection.check your work if its put together right..sometimes the needle pops out of its holder.there is a small oring under the top cap that sometimes gets lost.
