My wife is warming up to riding and would like to add some support either a sissy bar or trunk with backrest. First step is to get her own helmet.

Any advice? The Mutazu DMY trunks look decent although I'm not sure what I'd need for the mount. I have a relatively stock 2004 650 Classic.

Any pics of trunks on 650's?

Thanks!

I think a 650 2 up does not need the added weight of a trunk. Go sissybar.

I've been thinking about this a lot. Someday I'd love to go to a 1300 with quick release fairing, bags and trunk. I'm thinking she'd probably like the trunk but the sissy bar is the more practical choice for the 650.

It would only be here and there which makes the weight not much of a concern (plus she's small) but it also adds a point for the lower cost sissy bar.

It is fairly typical for bikes, even big ones like Gold Wings, to be rated for about 330 pounds total. That includes rider, passenger, and all cargo. Some are rated for max GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) instead, which means you subtract the wet weight of the bike from GVWR and the difference is what you can carry. You might consider honestly looking at your and your passenger's weights and see how much leeway you really have. Be aware that tires also have maximum weight ratings, and one of the most common things found at bike rallies is overloaded and underinflated tires.

Thanks. Together we're right at 330 and I check my tires regularly. I bought the 650 since she wanted nothing to do with bikes. She's slowly coming around so if she gets hooked, then we'll move to a bigger bike but for now it is what it is.

I had an 01 650 classic like yours (red);-) have the wife sit or rid on a couple bikes with different sissys to get a good ht. My wife liked the mid ht. Also I kept my pressure at the recommended psi & stiffened the spring a little for 2up. I didn't feel it much riding solo so I left it. As for max wt WE were at 400lbs (ma @ 230 & her @ 170) got 47mpg @ 60-65mph & 51 @55mph,2up.

Good idea about testing out the height!
