I am helping a friend who just purchased VStar 650 and the idle speed is so low that when the bike is warm and the choke is pushed back in it still dies. I was wondering if there is an idle knob somewhere that can easily be adjusted/accessed or is this something that has to be done by a mechanic?

Here is a link to the Service Manual for the 650.

Info on idle adjust is here. 3-10.

How long has it sat? You could have clogged primary jets. If it has sat for an extended period, say over the winter you might need to remove carbs and clean.

Awesome. Thank you very much. It did sit for while but there is only 2900 miles on it. It is a 2005 so I have put new fuel in it and will try cleaning the jets next. The idle has never been adjusted, even after the 500 and 2000 mile portions of the break-in stage. So, I assume that this too is part of the problem.

I wouldn't rule it out, but it won't take much turning to see a result.
