I have an '02 Vstar 1100, mostly stock bike. Took off for a ride and within half of a mile from the start the bike lost power but still running. Returned home, pulled the plugs and the rear plug was only warm--not hot. I was told to replace the plug, but I doubt that's all there is to it since I just replaced the plugs around 1500 miles ago. What's next? Also, I noticed there is oil leaking from the top of the intake manifold, though I haven't taken it apart yet. Could this be the root of the issue? I'm basically a DIY beginner, so if you tell me to check the coil...the service manual tells me what it is and how to get to it, but I have no idea what/how to actually test it. Before it's suggested, no, I don't have the means to pay a shop $60/hour to fix it. thnx

If the plug had black oil on it then it is being fouled by rings or valve guides, etc. Check for spark, ground the plug with the cap on and try to start engine. Don't hold it in your hand when you do this. If spark is good, smell the plug for gas fumes. If spark and gas is present, check compression with a tester. Hope this helps. Wavelength.

spark

Wavelength, I have spark after following advice. I am guessing I need to do some cleaning on the carbs next. I did watch a youtube video on a carb cleaning for a '99 vstar 650, so I'm guessing there won't be a big difference compared to my '02 1100. I'll check the forum for carb cleanings, too. Thank you for the assistance and I'd be glad to listen if you have further recommendations/change of direction.

Remember those straw brooms? A thin straw from one of those is excellent for cleaning the small carb passages. Also, you can usually find an air/fuel flow diagram to get an idea of what passages should be there.

Sick Mick- great tech site on wiki. Is there one for v-twin 250? Looked but couldn't find. Wavelength
I honestly do not know. I do the one for the 1100.....but no other bikes...it's just too much work.
