Hi folks I think I might be developing an oil leak from my rear cylinder on my 09 Strat S. I've noticed some oil drips on the cooling fins and some spraying on my left saddle bag. I only have 3500 kms on the bike and I was wondering if any of you have ever seen this. The bike only had 780 kms when I got it late this summer.

Are you using syn oil?? If so change it to Dino oil, and the leak will probably stop.
This has been discussed a lot on these forums, about syn oil in our bikes, they don't like it much.

personally i'v never seen anything stop gasket/seal leaks other than changing the gasket/seal, when i was 16 i had a little dirt bike that leaked between the case halfs so i drained the oil and inverted the engine then cleaned and epoxied the leak. when it started leaking over a year later i did it again and sold it. lol

I had a similar issue, and it turned out to be the breather hose above the rear cylinder. You may want to check that as well.

i replaced the the breather squeeze clamp with a hose clamp and fuel line clamps on all fuel lines. the one at petcock started leaking so i decided to change them all. never did care for squeeze clamps

Well folks I cleaned the oil leak and went for a little spin today and I'm affraid that I'll be removing the head and replacing the gasket in the spring. I checked the oil level and it was fine but there was weeping oil still. Hopefully this isn't a big job.

i know the panic well when you first see your bike leaking oil, fortunately my last leak was just the neutral switch on the vstar but the sportster leaks at the cylinder base it only leaks about an oz every 500 miles. so i haven't got to fixing it yet. i don't ride it much anyway so i may wait for it to get a little worse before tearing it down, it's an old 1965 piece of crap iron head that can sprain ankles. i got it in 75 for a song. kinda lost interest it anyway.
