I just saw this blog in an email from Bike Bandit this morning:

I thought it was perfect timing considering my Wife is pregnant with our first child and is Due April 4th.

My father has never liked that I ride street bikes now, he never had a problem with us riding dirt bikes and quads as teenagers, and since my wife first got pregnant he keeps pressuring me to sell my motorcycles.

Fortunately for me, my wife trusts me, she loves riding cupcake, and has told me how she cannot wait for the pregnancy to be over so we can go on rides again just the two of us. So I have no pressure from her to sell either bike.

I like to think I am a safe rider, have been riding the FZ1 for almost 5 years now, and the only off I have had is at 10mph doing something I could have avoided. I have had a number of close calls over the years, ALL of which I could have avoided by just going slower. As the baby gets closer to arriving in this world, it is top of mind for me to be safe, and I have noticed I am in less of a rush and more careful than before. I see no reason to stop commuting to and from work everyday in my bike.

If I did sell the bike and take a car to work, this is what would happen:

I would have to leave earlier each day and would get home later. (I save about 20 min per morning and as much as an hour each afternoon by taking the bike instead of the car)
I would spend more money on Gasoline each week.
I would have much higher levels of stress dealing with the Terrible SoCal traffic each day.

I see taking the motorcycle as a benefit to my overall heath and lifestyle, giving me more time at home with my family.

Neither the FZ nor the V-Star are going up for sale.



What have been your experiences? I am specifically looking for comments from those here who are parents, but anyone is free to comment of course.

it's a lot easier for casual riders to give up riding for safety reasons but for everyday riders it's near impossible without depression setting in which makes the whole family miserable. i rode more conservatively when my children were born and continue to do so now

I sold my last bike due to similar pressures and because it was the "responsible" thing to do. Every Spring the itch would come back and I'd miss it. I tried curing the itch with fast cars and other toys but there's nothing like it. The closest I got was getting a jeep and taking the doors and top off.

IMO, you lucked out finding a lady that enjoys riding with you. Do what works for you two. Just make sure you have a plan and good insurance to provide for the little one in case anything happens.

my girl increased my insurance when she became pregnant but i think she would have done it regardless of the motorcycle.

Great post Klurejr. I rode more conservatively after becoming a parent and a traffic accident investigator.Now that I'm a grandfather, I'm probably a tad more conservative. I can see where if I commuted daily on my bike and gave it up for responsibility reasons, I'd be major depressed. Riding for me is a form of therapy, even though its seasonal.

I sold mine after the baby was born. Was without my own for 13 yrs. I would ride a friends every once in awhile. I was driving 100 miles round trip to work and gas was killing us. I'm very lucky to have the wife I do. We went out and got me just a 750 honda for riding to and from work. Ended up making some great friends that are now considered family. 3 yrs later the wife decided she did'nt like being on the back and wanted her own. I bought her a used honda 250 rebel. She got her permit and we drove all over and then she took the class. 2 yrs later the daughter took the class. Daughter now has the 750 i got back into it with and bought the wife a vtx 1300. I got the Roadliner. All happy.

my buddy's wife is pregnant. she's currently letting him upgrade from his vic.
in these situations i'm always reminded of a quote from Rocky II when Adrian wants Rocky to stop boxing because she's pregnant:

Rocky Balboa: I never asked you to stop being a woman, so please don't ask me to stop being a man.

My wife said exactly the same thing. I remember riding on motorcycles with my dad when I was little. My parents even rode with my older brother between them when he was under 5 years old :surprise: not that I would condone that. When they get old enough to understand safety and can easily reach the foot rests I wouldn't have a problem sharing my passion.

My wife and I get to ride every once in a while, and my parents love taking the grandson for a day or a couple of hours so my wife and I can spend some time on the road.

I guess its about risk vs reward. We will be filling out a will for a worst case scenario (I'm 31 and my wife is 26).

Good story bigdaddyliner. I think the more people who ride, the better. It's hard to stay away from something you love. And it can and should be a life style. People who ride are more aware than the average cager.

I waited for my kids to become adults and after retiring from the Air Force, not because I wanted to wait that long but my wife didn't want me to ride. I told her once I hit 51 that it was now or never and I didn't want any regrets going forward with life. It didn't make her happy but I am so very glad that I decided to proceed with riding. Now my daughter and son-in-law ride as well and with two young sons [my wonderful grandsons] they're both being very responsible in how they ride [they're on the sportsbikes, I'm on my 950T]. As was mentioned earlier, do what best for your situation. As long as I'm blessed with good health I'll ride the wheels off of my bike, God willing!
